2018-12-05 00:34:16 <Barbarossa_> Hello, there! Can I request technical assistance?
2018-12-05 00:37:11 <andre__> !ask | Barbarossa_
2018-12-05 00:37:22 <andre__> Meh. Well, then manually:
2018-12-05 00:37:26 <andre__> Barbarossa_: Please feel free to ask your question: if anybody who knows the answer is around, they will surely reply. Don't ask for help or for attention before actually asking your question, that's just a waste of time – both yours and everybody else's. :)
2018-12-05 00:38:03 <Barbarossa_> I'm unable to add any Serbian-language fields on Wikidata. Each time I try to add one, this message is displayed.
2018-12-05 00:38:14 <Barbarossa_> Could not save due to an error. Unrecognized value for parameter "language": sr-cyrl.
2018-12-05 00:38:25 <Barbarossa_> or this one
2018-12-05 00:38:32 <Barbarossa_> Could not save due to an error. Unrecognized value for parameter "language": sr-latn.
2018-12-05 00:39:52 <andre__> If you have exact steps to reproduce the problem: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/How_to_report_a_bug under the project tag #wikidata (if noone else in #wikidata is around)
2018-12-05 00:42:54 <andre__> Barbarossa_, or maybe this is https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T158058 ?
2018-12-05 00:51:54 <Barbarossa_> Well, I've got a similar problem. There might be an issue with the Serbian language code(s). As you can see from the above error messages, there are two language parameters for Serbian on Wikidata ('sr-cyrl' and 'sr-latn'), as this language uses two alphabets (Cyrillic and Latin).
2018-12-05 00:54:18 <Barbarossa_> Precisely, this isue could be caused by the language converter, which used by the Serbian WMF projects.
2018-12-05 00:54:35 <Barbarossa_> *issue
2018-12-05 00:58:44 <Barbarossa_> The converter normally uses 'sr-ec' and 'sr-el' language codes, which are obviously different from the ones on Wikidata.
2018-12-05 01:03:10 <Barbarossa_> Or there might be no connection between Wikidata and the converter after all.
2018-12-05 01:09:30 <Barbarossa_> I sought help on the Wikidata IRC channel, but no one responded. Perhaps this is a sign that I should turn to Phabricator for assistance.
2018-12-05 01:11:46 <Barbarossa_> Bye, everyone!
2018-12-05 06:20:34 <Dragonfly6-7> URL2Commons is dead.
2018-12-05 06:20:42 <Dragonfly6-7> 502 Bad Gateway
2018-12-05 06:20:42 <Dragonfly6-7> nginx/1.13.6
2018-12-05 06:20:53 <Dragonfly6-7> no idea if this is the appropriate place to report it
2018-12-05 06:21:28 <Reedy> #wikimedia-cloud
2018-12-05 06:41:34 <Dragonfly6-7> thank you
2018-12-05 10:40:05 <gyan> Custom toolbar adding it says .wikiEditor is not a function. But same thing works if we add external scripts
2018-12-05 10:40:18 <gyan> Custom toolbar adding it says .wikiEditor is not a function. But same thing works if we add external scripts
2018-12-05 11:14:08 <andre__> do you load the module "ext.wikiEditor"? If so, how?
2018-12-05 15:00:44 <wm-bot> Technical Advice IRC meeting starting in 60 minutes in channel #wikimedia-tech, hosts: @CFisch_WMDE - all questions welcome, more infos: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Technical_Advice_IRC_Meeting
2018-12-05 15:16:11 <ShakespeareFan00> Hi anyone around?
2018-12-05 15:16:36 <ShakespeareFan00> I'd like to suggest a question for the tech-advice meeting but wanted to ask if it was appropriate
2018-12-05 15:17:10 <ShakespeareFan00> Namely how to generate "secure" passwords, given a run of compromise attempts recently?
2018-12-05 15:23:56 <volans> ShakespeareFan00: of course it depends on the target audience, but the EFF article should be a good introduction IMHO: https://ssd.eff.org/en/module/creating-strong-passwords
2018-12-05 15:27:48 <ShakespeareFan00> Thanks
2018-12-05 15:28:07 <ShakespeareFan00> I'll leave the question posted , but I have my answer
2018-12-05 15:37:52 <Platonides> ShakespeareFan00: use a password manager
2018-12-05 15:38:02 <Platonides> let it generate the passwords for you...
2018-12-05 15:38:10 <Platonides> and *don't reuse passwords*
2018-12-05 15:50:20 <wm-bot> Technical Advice IRC meeting starting in 10 minutes in channel #wikimedia-tech, hosts: @CFisch_WMDE - all questions welcome, more infos: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Technical_Advice_IRC_Meeting
2018-12-05 15:51:35 <andre__> ShakespeareFan00: https://www.xkcd.com/936/ ? :)
2018-12-05 15:51:50 <andre__> but yeah, don't reuse is even more important in these days
2018-12-05 15:54:03 <shreyasminocha> classic
2018-12-05 15:54:25 <shreyasminocha> for a brief time, i literally use "correcthorsebatterystaple"
2018-12-05 15:56:01 <shreyasminocha> do you guys think that an encrypted textfile of pwd's is a good idea?
2018-12-05 16:02:16 <Lucas_WMDE> andre__: https://www.xkcd.com/792/ :r
2018-12-05 16:02:19 <Lucas_WMDE> * :)
2018-12-05 16:03:37 <Lucas_WMDE> shreyasminocha: use a password manager (e. g. KeePassX) and let that deal with the encryption
2018-12-05 16:04:16 <shreyasminocha> Lucas_WMDE: does keepassx store passwords on the cloud?
2018-12-05 16:04:26 <Lucas_WMDE> no, locally
2018-12-05 16:04:36 <Lucas_WMDE> in a file, which you can copy wherever you want (it’s encrypted)
2018-12-05 16:04:41 <Lucas_WMDE> I regularly `scp` mine onto my server
2018-12-05 16:05:38 <shreyasminocha> i see. i switched away from lastpass because of those concerns
2018-12-05 16:14:17 <andre__> Lucas_WMDE, heh, righter!
2018-12-05 16:22:33 <CFisch_WMDE> I just realized, that I started the Technical Advice meeting in the wrong channel ^^`
2018-12-05 16:22:46 <LotR> I was told keepassxc was the better choice these days
2018-12-05 16:23:14 <CFisch_WMDE> So welcome everyone to the Technical Advice meeting in this channel! :-)
2018-12-05 16:23:18 <CFisch_WMDE> \o
2018-12-05 16:23:26 <andre__> aha, aha. I was confused by the silence :P
2018-12-05 16:25:03 <CFisch_WMDE> hehe
2018-12-05 16:25:24 <CFisch_WMDE> None complained in #wikimedia-dev
2018-12-05 16:25:47 <andre__> "All bugs already solved, we're feature complete, now everybody go home, nothing to see here"?
2018-12-05 16:25:57 <CFisch_WMDE> +1
2018-12-05 16:26:26 <CFisch_WMDE> Sooooo: Anyone here having questions around technical topics in the Mediawiki world?
2018-12-05 16:35:17 <LotR> Maybe I do. I was going to sit this one out to see what the scope of 'technical topics' was, but.. :)
2018-12-05 16:36:22 <quiddity> LotR, go for it!
2018-12-05 16:37:31 <LotR> I saw wikidata has a EU Participant ID property. But there's only 4 instances
2018-12-05 16:38:02 <CFisch_WMDE> :-)
2018-12-05 16:38:27 <CFisch_WMDE> Any Wikidata-folks here? ;-)
2018-12-05 16:38:52 <LotR> I have matched the info from the cordis DB to the GRID db, on perfect (but case-insensitive) name matches
2018-12-05 16:39:50 <quiddity> Lucas_WMDE, +1 to what lotr wrote earlier, i too believe KeePassXC is generally preferred. Hence I proposed this change https://github.com/privacytoolsIO/privacytools.io/commit/37a81d442d5576bb77a12ce9136139ab946cf1a9
2018-12-05 16:39:51 <LotR> How do I go about getting the matches verified and entered into wikidata?
2018-12-05 16:40:34 <CFisch_WMDE> So to get the question right, with 4 instances you mean it's only used 4 times on Wikidata items?
2018-12-05 16:40:37 <CFisch_WMDE> LotR: ^
2018-12-05 16:40:46 <LotR> correct
2018-12-05 16:41:07 <CFisch_WMDE> Yeah that just seems to be incomplete now :-)
2018-12-05 16:41:35 <CFisch_WMDE> Entering these things in semi-automated way might be tricky
2018-12-05 16:41:47 <CFisch_WMDE> I do not now anything about that
2018-12-05 16:42:16 <CFisch_WMDE> Maybe Lucas_WMDE does :-D
2018-12-05 16:42:26 <LotR> I thought I could use the wikidata data to help me further disambiguate organisations :) But instead adding to wikidata seems like a good alternative
2018-12-05 16:42:36 <CFisch_WMDE> hehe
2018-12-05 16:42:45 <LotR> I have around 1800 matches
2018-12-05 16:43:06 <CFisch_WMDE> Add them manually *duck*
2018-12-05 16:43:38 <LotR> which is still far from complete, but wikidata probably doesn't want entries for every participant organisation anyway
2018-12-05 16:44:38 <CFisch_WMDE> Yeah that's another question - but I mean if the organization is already in Wikidata and the property is there - there's no reason to not add the info
2018-12-05 16:45:01 <LotR> sure, that's an option, but I'm new to wikidata, so I'd like to have someone verify that e.g. my process of getting the matches is acceptable
2018-12-05 16:46:14 <CFisch_WMDE> In my brief understanding it's probably valid if you can reference the source and the source seems to be valid as well. ( you can add references to each statement )
2018-12-05 16:47:13 <LotR> I have at least one questionable match. And a bunch where there seem to be multiple EU PICs for a single organisation
2018-12-05 16:47:52 <Lucas_WMDE> quiddity / LotR why is KeePassXC preferred? I never heard of it before
2018-12-05 16:48:02 <Lucas_WMDE> LotR: what do you mean by “4 instances”?
2018-12-05 16:48:08 <CFisch_WMDE> Would it make sense for an organisation to have multiple PICs?
2018-12-05 16:48:39 <CFisch_WMDE> Lucas_WMDE: Overall only used 4 times on items ;-). Read up! :-P
2018-12-05 16:48:53 <LotR> the EU does have a "what if my org got registered multiple times" FAQ, so I think yes
2018-12-05 16:49:00 <CFisch_WMDE> Hehe
2018-12-05 16:49:22 <Lucas_WMDE> well that’s just not true
2018-12-05 16:49:30 <Lucas_WMDE> there are five links to it from the Item namespace :P
2018-12-05 16:49:40 <CFisch_WMDE> LotR: Than that might be just fine. You can have several values for a property.
2018-12-05 16:49:48 <Lucas_WMDE> (the fifth being https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q1438124#P1687, it’s a bit of a cheat ;) )
2018-12-05 16:50:08 <CFisch_WMDE> Just before the time is up and we just talked about Wikidata property usage:
2018-12-05 16:50:22 <CFisch_WMDE> Anyone else having a question of technical manner to discuss?
2018-12-05 16:51:07 <Lucas_WMDE> does anyone sometimes get “invalid magic word” errors on their local wiki?
2018-12-05 16:51:48 <CFisch_WMDE> Lucas_WMDE: Do you see this error on a page or just in the debug?
2018-12-05 16:52:07 <Lucas_WMDE> on a page, it’s an “internal error”, replacing all other content
2018-12-05 16:52:10 <Lucas_WMDE> but it’s just on my local wiki
2018-12-05 16:52:16 <Lucas_WMDE> (any page, as far as I can tell)
2018-12-05 16:52:28 <Lucas_WMDE> but if it doesn’t ring a bell, I can work around it for now
2018-12-05 16:52:34 <Lucas_WMDE> just wanted to check if it’s a known issue for anyone
2018-12-05 16:52:56 <CFisch_WMDE> I could imagine you imported wikitext from somewhere that relies on some fancy extension being able to parse the fancy wikitext magic words used.
2018-12-05 16:52:58 <LotR> Lucas_WMDE: maybe I should have said 4 triples where it's the predicate? :)
2018-12-05 16:53:11 <Lucas_WMDE> LotR: :D
2018-12-05 16:53:32 <Lucas_WMDE> anyways, I suppose you could ask the people who proposed the property if they plan to do an import or anything like that
2018-12-05 16:53:40 <Lucas_WMDE> CFisch_WMDE: it’s a magic word in core
2018-12-05 16:53:48 <Lucas_WMDE> expectunusedcategory
2018-12-05 16:53:54 <CFisch_WMDE> Lucas_WMDE: Are your local core + extensions on current master each?
2018-12-05 16:53:59 <Lucas_WMDE> I can comment out the corresponding line in MagicWordFactory.php to unbreak the wiki
2018-12-05 16:54:04 <Lucas_WMDE> I think they are, yes
2018-12-05 16:54:17 <quiddity> Lucas_WMDE, KeePassX hasn't been touched in 2.5 years, and it wasn't accepting patches. KeePassXC is a community fork (i won't attempt to summarize the added features!). It's also the *only* PM with a dedicated guide at https://ssd.eff.org/en/module-categories/tool-guides
2018-12-05 16:54:17 <LotR> I do that on the talk page I think right? (I'm a noob on all things wikimedia)
2018-12-05 16:54:35 <Lucas_WMDE> LotR: property talk page, yeah, I guess
2018-12-05 16:54:39 <Lucas_WMDE> or project chat if you want a larger audience
2018-12-05 16:54:58 <CFisch_WMDE> Lucas_WMDE: So you get that on every page? Or just on a specific one?
2018-12-05 16:55:16 <Lucas_WMDE> every page, as far as I can tell
2018-12-05 16:55:20 <CFisch_WMDE> o.O
2018-12-05 16:55:36 <Lucas_WMDE> though I don’t test it very much, usually I just comment out the line in MagicWordFactory
2018-12-05 16:55:45 <CFisch_WMDE> lol
2018-12-05 16:56:43 <CFisch_WMDE> I would first make sure you're on current master everywhere, have run the composer updates and the maintenance.php script
2018-12-05 16:56:56 <Lucas_WMDE> I’ve temporarily commented out all the wfLoadExtension and require_once in my LocalSettings.php, and it still happens
2018-12-05 16:57:12 <CFisch_WMDE> if it's still there you should probably throw away your whole setup and build it new ^^'
2018-12-05 16:57:14 <LotR> I had joined #wikidata yesterday (which is where I heard about this meeting), but it's been very quiet
2018-12-05 16:57:59 <CFisch_WMDE> LotR: Even if it's usually quit you can always at least try to ask questions :-)
2018-12-05 16:58:19 <quiddity> Question (I'll sneak one in before the end!): Is there anywhere appropriate I can link to this page from? https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Voice_assistants_and_Wikimedia -- i.e. I made a linkhub, but it's an orphan and I can't easily find anywhere to link it. (Plus/mostly I just want to advertise it to you, in case it's of interest. ;)
2018-12-05 16:58:29 <Platonides> if nobody asks, why would people answer? :)
2018-12-05 16:58:31 <Lucas_WMDE> CFisch_WMDE: did that, no change
2018-12-05 16:58:35 <Lucas_WMDE> I’ll just comment out the line again ^^
2018-12-05 16:58:45 <CFisch_WMDE> hehe
2018-12-05 16:59:04 <Lucas_WMDE> or perhaps I’ll file a bug on Phabricator, or ask on Discourse, if I’m sufficiently fed up with it
2018-12-05 16:59:09 <CFisch_WMDE> Lucas_WMDE: tl;dr I never get that error :-)
2018-12-05 17:00:05 <Lucas_WMDE> CFisch_WMDE: ah hah! rebuildLocalizationCache --lang en fixed it
2018-12-05 17:00:21 <Lucas_WMDE> got the hint from https://www.mediawiki.org/w/index.php?title=Topic:Rkuuwdkxcu9f9bcb&topic_showPostId=rl09ky7gev7qmczm#flow-post-rl09ky7gev7qmczm
2018-12-05 17:00:33 <Lucas_WMDE> (I should probably rebuild the other languages too)
2018-12-05 17:00:48 <CFisch_WMDE> quiddity: Thanks for the link. No idea though ;-)
2018-12-05 17:00:56 <LotR> is wikidata still using blazegraph as the storage engine? it (at least the open source part) seems to be pretty dormant
2018-12-05 17:00:59 <quiddity> :)
2018-12-05 17:01:45 <CFisch_WMDE> quiddity: maybe accessibility, I mean it's not _really_ about that, but still.
2018-12-05 17:02:06 <Lucas_WMDE> LotR: BlazeGraph is used for the Wikidata Query Service, but the main data store of Wikidata itself is still an SQL database
2018-12-05 17:02:18 <Lucas_WMDE> WDQS just pulls the data from Wikidata
2018-12-05 17:02:23 <quiddity> CFisch_WMDE, I mostly just want to nerd-snipe more people into contributing to the FOSS competitors to alexa. ;-)
2018-12-05 17:02:23 <CFisch_WMDE> So anyways - I will wrap it up here. Feel free to continue talking but I'm heading home now :-)
2018-12-05 17:02:35 <quiddity> o/
2018-12-05 17:02:35 <CFisch_WMDE> See you to the next meeting!
2018-12-05 17:02:41 <CFisch_WMDE> quiddity: Hehe yeah, nice ^^
2018-12-05 17:02:47 <CFisch_WMDE> Ah
2018-12-05 17:02:55 <Lucas_WMDE> LotR: you may be interested in https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T206560
2018-12-05 17:03:01 <CFisch_WMDE> Almost forgot:
2018-12-05 17:03:25 <CFisch_WMDE> Today is that special Wednesday where we have another advice hour
2018-12-05 17:03:39 <LotR> Lucas_WMDE: ah, great. thanks
2018-12-05 17:03:43 <CFisch_WMDE> At 11PM UTC
2018-12-05 17:03:56 <CFisch_WMDE> So stay tuned! :-D
2018-12-05 17:04:20 <CFisch_WMDE> o/

2018-12-05 22:57:23 <nuria> hello
2018-12-05 23:00:56 <bd808> thanks for signing up to do this again nuria! :)
2018-12-05 23:01:13 <nuria> I hope tgr is coming too...
2018-12-05 23:01:52 <tgr> he sure is!
2018-12-05 23:02:52 <tgr> Hi everyone, welcome to this month's Americal edition of the tech advice IRC meeting!
2018-12-05 23:03:11 <tgr> if you have any questions, please ask away!
2018-12-05 23:03:30 <tgr> you can also ask in Spanish or Hungarian
2018-12-05 23:04:11 <tgr> Üdv a műszaki tanácsadó IRC fogadóórán! Magyarul is tudtok kérdezni.
2018-12-05 23:20:14 <bd808> why are there no questions for nuria and tgr? :(
2018-12-05 23:21:13 <nuria> WE CAN ANSWER ANYTHING MUAHAHAHA
2018-12-05 23:24:20 <bawolff> If you could be any kind of tree, what tree would you be?
2018-12-05 23:24:23 <tgr> bd808: you might have to register some fake newbie accounts to keep up host morale
2018-12-05 23:25:00 <bd808> I should just start finding really old bugs in Phabricator and pasting them here for you to solve
2018-12-05 23:25:11 <tgr> red-black tree?
2018-12-05 23:25:20 <tgr> I forgot what that is but always liked the name
2018-12-05 23:26:17 <bawolff> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oBn1UHtYP9Q
2018-12-05 23:26:23 <bd808> its a semi-balanced tree variant right? Like an AVL tree but not guaranteed to be in balance at all times?
2018-12-05 23:26:23 <bawolff> It does have a cool name
2018-12-05 23:27:01 <bd808> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red%E2%80%93black_tree -- pretty close guess
2018-12-05 23:29:00 <nuria> i was looking forward to be tgr cheerleader when it comes to answer mediawiki questions
2018-12-05 23:29:41 <bd808> looks at https://discourse-mediawiki.wmflabs.org/latest for unanswered questions
2018-12-05 23:30:24 <bawolff> Well, since we're here. I was wondering what is up with the weird way beeline formats multiline results
2018-12-05 23:30:59 <bawolff> Because it is really odd. With control characters and the word "NULL"
2018-12-05 23:31:14 <bawolff> although definite possibility I'm just doing it wrong
2018-12-05 23:32:06 <nuria> bawolff: beeline is bad for you
2018-12-05 23:32:23 <nuria> bawolff: if i coudl remove that "hive is deprecated... " i would
2018-12-05 23:32:40 <bawolff> Once again proving I should never read the docs ;)
2018-12-05 23:33:02 <nuria> bawolff: i did add thsi to docs" https://wikitech.wikimedia.org/wiki/Analytics/Systems/Cluster/Beeline
2018-12-05 23:33:05 <nuria> *this
2018-12-05 23:33:33 <nuria> bawolff: as in " error reporting is not working well" , SORRY you run into it
2018-12-05 23:33:58 <bawolff> Hey, it got me the info i needed, that's all that matters
2018-12-05 23:34:07 <nuria> bawolff: i think it is the typical java thing marked as deprecated but its subtitution works just 70% of the time
2018-12-05 23:34:47 <nuria> bawolff: ok, do ping us next time if you run into trouble, hive is a lot better to know what might be wrong with your query
2018-12-05 23:35:19 <bawolff> It was a couple weeks ago. It wasn't that the query errored, it was more the output of it was just in a super weird format
2018-12-05 23:35:29 <bawolff> tries to remember what i was querying
2018-12-05 23:40:34 <bawolff> select * from apiaction where params['action'] = 'stashedit' and year = 2018 and month = 12 and day=4 and hour=3 limit 1;
2018-12-05 23:40:56 <bawolff> is a random example with the weird newline behaviour
2018-12-05 23:42:29 <bd808> apiaction! I made that!
2018-12-05 23:44:23 <bawolff> stashedit was just something off the top of my head that would definitely have newlines in it
2018-12-05 23:50:15 <nuria> bd808: api action has saved the day couple times SO YOU KNOW cc bawolff
2018-12-05 23:50:16 <tgr> IIRC one of the reasons for apiaction was that it can include POST data unlike webrequests, but POST data can have newlines
2018-12-05 23:51:02 <tgr> probably pretty easy to address on the MediaWiki end, anything that has newlines in it is not something we care about tracking
2018-12-05 23:51:04 <bawolff> I assume GET parameters are decoded, so they can have %0A too
2018-12-05 23:53:03 <bd808> TIL that the 2018 year to date action api request count is 103,099,662,196
2018-12-05 23:53:39 <bd808> (modulo a few days where the aggregate reports failed to run)
2018-12-05 23:58:13 <James_F> Is that all?
2018-12-05 23:59:25 <James_F> 103 B events is lower than I'd expect, somehow.
2018-12-05 23:59:42 <tgr> the action API gets around 4000 reqs/s, so it checks out
2018-12-05 23:59:55 <James_F> Right.
