[09:01:47] I see a growing trend in this, it's really not how Wikidata should work. https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=Q47141434&type=revision&diff=617952822&oldid=617952737 [09:31:38] Hmm. If we have a name, why wouldn't we have an item? [10:03:28] Hello. I'm looking for a way to tap my wiki to wikidata's structured data. I tried yesterday to install WBC to access it only to find out that the Wikibase extension does not support remote repositories at this time. What approaches would you suggest I take to bring some of the wealth of information from Wikidata to my wiki [10:05:46] I think Wikibase does support remote repositories, but the feature is not enabled on Wikidata itself yet [10:06:48] I think it is going to happen at some point so if your project is not urgent I would just wait [10:09:31] pintoch: Do I have the correct understanding that WBC can access multiple repos ? [10:10:10] Because I need a dedicated WBR and another that hold (selected) data from Wikidata [10:10:46] pintoch: yeah I understand the remote repo access could be real resource drain on WMF servers [10:25:17] Hiya WikidataFacts and thanks for your help last night [10:26:55] good morning jubo2 :) [10:27:07] I gotta make some breakfast first, so sorry if I’m a bit slow to respond for the next few minutes :D [10:30:07] :P [11:05:14] jubo2: yeah I am wondering about the resource drain too [11:06:20] This https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:How_to_use_data_on_Wikimedia_projects mentions that the Wikidata data cannot be used on non-WMF wikis (i.e. at least not powered by Wikidata itself) [11:07:09] Should probably mention this in the Wikibase documentation somewhere for others like me bashking in wanting to start including Wikidata data on their wiki to make information for the users of the wiki [11:16:43] Is it sensible to install a local Wikibase on en.consumerium.org/wiki/ (does not exist yet) or something like consudata.consumerium.org/wiki/ (ditto) ? [11:17:34] Also I noticed that one can keep the data items in main namespace or in a dedicated namespace and I don't understand the ins-and-outs of this choice as I'm a newb to this [14:12:26] If I make a Wikibase installation into the URL test.consumerium.org/wiki/ what is the route to migrate the contents of that repository to reside in the final end address of en.consumerium.org/wiki/ ? [14:14:41] I suppose the Wikibase doesn't care if it's domain name changes but what about the case that we would like to start en.consumerium.org/wiki/ with all the Wikibase data there but not the pages and histories from test.consumerium.org [15:15:57] The " deadliest aviation incident in" items seem a wrong way to handle this. https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/User:Joshbaumgartner/Aviation_accidents/Deadliest [15:16:08] Example: https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q47522421 [15:22:19] I want to bring information from Wikidata to my wiki and I am searching for a good and sensible way to go about it [15:22:39] Thanks in advance for any info. [16:54:51] Hi jubo2! [16:55:32] So, namespace choice is totally up to you, if the wiki will mainly contain wikibase items then perhaps have wikibase items in the main namespace, if it also contains wiki pages and they are the main content maybe have them in the main namespace [16:55:37] It doesn't really matter :) [16:56:11] In terms of the domain, again, totally up to you, are you gonna have 1 wiki or multiple wikis? do you need seperate domains for them? etc [16:56:53] in terms of migrating data from one one (for example test) to the other, that depends on what you want to do, you could just dump the mysql and load it into your main wiki [16:57:19] If you already have the main wiki, you could write a script to just import the wikidata items, etc, but again, depends on what you want to do exactly [16:58:10] In terms of bringing wikidata data to your own wiki, you can load a whole json dump of wikidata if you really want to, or load parts / individual items [16:58:29] there is also https://github.com/filbertkm/WikibaseImport though im not sure if that is working on the latest versions of wikibase [16:58:40] There are a couple of issue filed @ https://github.com/filbertkm/WikibaseImport/issues [17:00:35] jubo2: feel free to ask anything else :) I'll try and respond eventually :D [17:04:05] Thanks for the information addshore. I'm not adept at writing scripts [17:05:37] So the Wikibase Client needs a way to talk with the repository. It needs to be able to access its database. Can the database be on a different machine? Can Wikibase Client access multiple repositories? [17:15:46] The dB can be on a different machine to the webserver [17:16:04] And also the dB of a client can be on a different machine to the dB of the repo [17:16:38] Right now I think it is 1 repo per client, however that will change in the future (it might have already) [17:16:48] It will be changing for structured data on wikimedia commons [18:59:50] hi, can anyone advice me how to use wd filled parameters in infoboxes on non-wmf wiki? or refer me to guide on how to do that? [19:15:52] wesalius: if I've figured this out correctly it is not implemented yet in Wikibase for non-WMF wikis to do that. Or maybe there are hacky ways of doing it [19:17:00] jubo2: I was guessing that based on this 3 years old RfC [19:17:00] https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Requests_for_comment/Non-WMF_wikis [19:17:23] jubo2: but I hoped that maybe it got solved in the meantime [19:17:52] jubo2: is there a plan to implement it? or can you refer me to somewhere/someone where I can get more information about that?
