[22:32:33] howdy folks! [22:32:41] Hey ragesoss :) [22:33:05] what's the reasoning behind enabling the patrolled notifications by default? [22:33:23] err, who what where? [22:34:02] when a new page patroller patrols a newcomer's page (even a sandbox), there's a Notifcation. [22:34:13] except it doesn't contain any useful or actionable information. [22:34:40] and the language is kind of off-putting... especially for someone with no context for "patrol" in the Wikipedia context. [22:34:55] Oh, that's an Echo bug.. [22:34:59] 2 secs.. [22:35:15] https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=57517 [22:36:05] Re: the original rationale for the configuration, I'm not familiar with it. I think Ironholds might know? [22:36:46] yeah, I'd seen that bug. [22:37:07] Re: the Echo language - please leave suggestions at the talkpage here (doing a thorough overhaul is somewhere on my gigantic todo list) https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Echo_%28Notifications%29/Message_audit [22:37:52] quiddity: so if I submitted a patch to a) change the language, and b) turn that Notification type off by default, that might be productive? [22:39:50] If you can turn it off for "patrol" whilst leaving it enabled for "review" (page-curation), that'd be ideal. (if I remember correctly) [22:41:12] quiddity: in the case of page-curation, there's likely to be actual actionable review information that the message would lead a newbie to? [22:42:48] I'm not familiar enough with page-curation to know. Again, Ironholds would be the person to ask. (He was CL during Page-curation and Echo development.) [22:43:05] sorry :( [22:43:41] quiddity: thanks. here's the email message copy that I got forwarded (which a student editor had found confusing and a little intimidating): User:BSchilling/sandbox was patrolled by DragonflySixtyseven. [22:44:06] I don't see the word "patrolled" in your message audit page, but I'll poke around git to find where that comes from. [22:44:54] I don't actually see those patrolled notifs being useful for anyone. If you're experienced enough to care, your already autopatrolled. [22:45:08] oh, maybe they did get separated at some point? [22:45:25] quiddity: yeah, I think they must have. [22:45:43] I'll do some testing at testwiki (if everything is installed there) once I'm done current tasks [23:26:48] quiddity: I found the message. It got changed locally via mediawiki: message.
