[10:52:29] srish_aka_tux: o/ does GSoC have a concept of microtasks? that is, if an applicant has a bunch of Wikimedia contributions from the past, should I ask them to do some more specifically for GSoC, or is that unnecessary? [10:59:19] tgr: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Google_Summer_of_Code/Mentors says "Point them to self-contained, easy and newcomer-friendly bugs to fix." [10:59:38] If that's not clear enough then it should get fixed, indeed. [11:05:40] @tgr Yes, I think that is important. All candidates should follow the same process. Also, the other way round, we have this in the participants' guide as well. See step 7 https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Google_Sumer_of_Code/Participants#Application_process_steps. [11:09:44] ok, thanks [11:12:15] andre__: the point is that the person who applied (T218277#5064752) does not look like a newcomer, and Google's own guide doesn't seem to require microcontributions unlike Outreachy, so I was wondering if that's a required step or just a means to evaluate the applicant's abilities [11:12:16] T218277: Build statistics toolset to support WM-HU editor retention grant - https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T218277 [11:27:29] @tgr Yes, it is not mandatory with GSoC like Outreachy but very much recommended. And, yes prior contributions help. In this case, I think it totally depends on your preference - if you want potential candidates to follow a project-specific process or consider their prior contributions. I like the former approach because that helps me understand a candidate's motivation for a particular project.
