[19:27:36] qchris are you busy atm? [19:31:11] Zppix: What's up? [19:34:41] qchris on gerrit i cannot add/remove users to the group located here: https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/#/admin/groups/1265,members [19:34:47] is it possible that you can modify that [19:35:07] Whom should I add/remove for you? [19:35:33] well if possible I would like to be able to modify in the future myself, but in the meantime could you add Reception123 [19:35:42] thanks in advance [19:35:59] Zppix you need to own the group [19:36:02] to make changes [19:36:10] so instead of the admin owning the group [19:36:13] Zppix I added the user for you. [19:36:16] the group should own it's self [19:36:25] Im aware [19:36:30] see https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T172794 [19:36:48] but when the group was created by repo admisn this wasnt setup that way (i assume it wasnt changed to be that way) [19:37:16] paladox: Is there an agreement among maintainers that groups should own themselves? [19:37:25] qchris not sure [19:37:36] but chad uninstalled the singleusergroup plugin [19:37:54] RainbowSprinkles: are you reading along? [19:37:56] which thus no one can edit refs/meta/config to work around users not being able to add other users to groups [19:38:54] I do not mind who per default owns a group. I am generating them as we always generated them. But if we want to switch the default (at least for new groups), that's fine by me. [19:39:08] singleusergroup was a batshit idea for a plugin -- it completely destroys the idea of role based access. [19:39:20] I mean groups owning themselves would make it so repo admins and gerrit admins and such dont have to carry out so many 1 click n done tasks such as adding users to groups on gerrit and just let the maintainers do it by default [19:39:38] Groups (generally) should self-manage. The reason they don't by default is there's no config for it. You can just define who owns a group by default. [19:39:53] A long time ago, I swapped that away from Admins to the Project & Group Creators to help remove bottlenecks. [19:40:07] Clearly it wasn't enough [19:40:07] * RainbowSprinkles shrugs [19:40:35] There's no defaultOwner = itself type thing [19:40:41] hmm [19:40:43] RainbowSprinkles maybe we ask on like wikitech-l or some approriate mailing list on the opinions of maintainers to see if they agree the default should change? [19:40:49] Well ... me scripts explicitly set the group owner when creating the group. So as you say we want to self-manage gorups, I'll just create groups that way going forward. [19:41:12] qchris: That's my preferred option [19:41:20] Cool beans. [19:41:23] Zppix: Not a conversation I have time for [19:43:56] RainbowSprinkles understood [19:45:45] qchris i guess i can close the task as resolved and let any existing users request ownership of there groups :) [19:46:05] if possible i would like that done (can open task if need be) ^ [19:46:41] Zppix: Done.
