[wikimedia/fundraising/crm] - https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/665071 (https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T274943) [13:49:16] howdy fr-tech [13:49:48] the gamestop pump and dump made it over to the bbc https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-56106824 [13:58:39] ha! am I missing it or did they not say who filed the suit? [14:02:08] This violated securities laws against manipulating the market, according to the lawsuit filed by Christian Iovin, a Washington state resident who purchased GameStop stock options. [14:02:55] ah, the suit is on behalf of people who were shorting the stock [14:03:00] a mutal fund the guy work for is also named as a defendant [14:03:08] right [14:03:48] maybe, I assumed it might have been people who joined the ride [14:03:54] they're testifying today in congress [14:04:29] https://news.bloomberglaw.com/securities-law/roaring-kitty-sued-for-securities-fraud-over-gamestop-rise [14:04:55] there are competing narratives in the media which makes it hard to really understand what the heck happened [14:06:08] but from what I saw on reddit while it was happening, the general theme seemed pretty clear that buying the stock was a fool's errand, and not a smart bet if the goal was to make money [14:07:03] so my interpretation, which might be wrong, is that he probably got wind of funds betting against the stock but since it was apparently trading below book value he bought a ton of stock and then promoted to the david and goliath narrative to increase demand and it just went crazy. [14:07:50] apparently he bought in at $5 a share and it went up to $400 [14:07:51] side note: this is filed in Springfield, MA which is 20 min from here, we have friends who work at Mass Mutual! [14:07:55] right [14:08:03] oh wow ha! [14:10:51] I think there's another layer which was that the other side of that were options traders betting on gamestop to fail, and probably driving the value down in doing so [14:11:30] I think they're the ones who were losing by the retail investors he was apparently motivating [14:11:35] The suit was filed by the securities class action firm Hagens Berman Sobol Shapiro on behalf of Christian Iovin of Washington state and similarly situated individuals. Iovin sold $200,000 worth of call options on GameStop shares when the stock was below $100. The stock quickly eclipsed $400 a share, forcing him to buy the calls back at elevated prices. [14:11:44] woah that's a huge hit [14:11:46] yep [14:12:07] so Iovin was betting on gamestop to fail [14:12:17] yeah he was writing call options [14:12:21] yeah [14:13:34] that type of trading has a name, picking up pennies in front of steamrollers [14:13:43] hah [14:14:42] so mr. kitty was telling his redditor crew that since it was shorted, if people started buying it up the price would go up [14:15:03] yeah as the shorts would have to cover, and it worked I guess [14:15:46] mr kitty lol a true bond villain [14:15:49] if it was all based on observation of publicly available information, and he wasn't inaccurate or misleading in the description, it seems pretty hard to make the argument that it was fraudulent--he was right, the price would go up [14:16:29] it stopped going up because they stepped in and blocked retail investors from buying [14:16:41] I think you have to disclose conflicts of interest when making any investment calls [14:17:38] and that fact that he's a licensed securities professional will make that harder to explain [14:17:53] I'm not sure he didn't disclose that he had the stock [14:18:31] yeah he could probably argue that [14:19:29] it depends how broadly they deem "market manipulation" i guess [14:19:32] yeah good question about the licensing aspect, this is the first I've heard anything about it, I wonder whether he was keeping that under wraps, there should be plenty of reddit history to say [14:19:45] yeah [14:20:12] shorting the stock in large volume seems like manipulation [14:20:22] so does blocking retail investors [14:20:33] yeah definitely the brokers have big questions to answer [14:20:58] unless they go with the "we knew people were being duped" argument, I can't see how they can justify it [14:21:02] there was also a lot of stuff I didn't really understand being talked about day to day as it was all happening about what the hedge funds were doing in response [14:22:15] I imagine the SEC will soon publish how much he made from the events [14:22:22] the reddit crew kept talking about how the hedge funds seemed to be selling shares to each other to make it look like there was more volume than there was, I couldn't really understand how that would work [14:22:28] and that will likely decide the gravity of it [14:22:38] if he made mlns I would image he's in trouble [14:23:00] he's not the only one who made money though [14:23:55] if other retail investors participating in the reddit thing made $$$ it seems like it would support his cause [14:24:24] i guess they've gone after him as he's one of the public faces of it [14:24:36] but you're right I imagine lots other cashed in [14:24:40] others* [14:26:05] I think the David and Goliath narrative here is an interesting one [14:26:30] I just hope it when all the dust settles the story isn't that the retail investors were the bad guys ~if~ it was actually the hedge funds that were being evil [14:26:46] on the face of it, retail traders burning hedgefunds sounds "feels" like a win [14:27:07] however if those hedgefunds are managing the pensions and other investments of non-evil entities it changes things [14:27:25] yeah [14:27:30] most hedge funds aren't actually hedge funds, as in closed private funds [14:28:14] and today, lots of money managers technically outsource investment decisions to small boutique funds including pension funds and other "well-meaning" investment entities [14:28:28] yeah [14:35:45] https://www.npr.org/2021/02/18/968829355/gamestop-hearing-today-roaring-kitty-along-with-ceos-to-appear-before-congress [14:47:17] good read [14:47:32] 50k to $48mln [14:49:24] and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melvin_Capital has a checkered past [14:50:47] yeah [14:51:35] from the NPR article it sound like he was very public about his investment [14:53:37] the whole story is fascinating, and one of my favorite things is all the media referring to people by their rediculous Reddit usernames [14:54:37] yes ha! [14:59:25] from that wiki article, "The short position adopted by Melvin Capital and others resulted in more than 139% percent of existing shares of GME being shorted" -- I don't really understand how 139% is even possible [15:00:28] does that mean that some shares were shorted by multiple investors at the same time, like two layers deep? [15:02:26] I'm not sure to be honest [15:02:56] I guess it might be due to options [15:07:42] good explanation of how that can happen here Jeff_Green https://www.fool.com/investing/2021/01/28/yes-a-stock-can-have-short-interest-over-100-heres/ [15:08:09] oh cool, reading... [15:08:25] in a nutshell, the same stock can be lent out multiple times for the purposes of shorting [15:10:08] the whole idea of selling a stock that you don't own but are only borrowingseems problematic [15:10:34] yeah right [15:38:29] going for a walk, back later [16:11:05] hey jgleeson Jeff_Green fr-tech :) [16:11:11] hey AndyRussG [16:11:23] :) [16:15:38] (PS1) Ejegg: Add es-419 support with fallback to es [core] (fundraising/REL1_35) - https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/665117 [16:21:04] hi AndyRussG jgleeson|away Jeff_Green [16:21:10] hi fr-tech [16:21:14] hey ejegg!
