[17:47:58] Hello everyone. [17:48:51] We'll be getting started with this month's metrics meeting in a few minutes' time. [17:49:50] The stream will be available on https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7vMFUaEeH3w which is now in the /topic for later joiners. [17:50:29] I'll be the IRC personage, able and willing to help out with questions and observations you might have, getting them answered (or at least asked) towards the end of our time together. [17:50:51] This week the lovely tzatziki/foks will be our facilitator. [17:57:28] Yay! [17:59:43] OK, we're starting now. [18:00:27] [Actually, now.] [18:00:42] Feed will start a few seconds after; if you have A/V issues, please shout and brendan_campbell will try to help. [18:10:46] The posters are super cool. [18:14:18] They are indeed. [18:15:40] What do we know about the how Turkish internet users are working around the block, and what role social media plays in that? For example, the proxy gir.im seems to be doing a bunch of work on Twitter (in Turkish) to point people to their proxy. (See @girimproxy) Do we know more about this landscape, and whether it our own social media accounts might be able to help people find ways to avoid the block? [18:15:56] A good question! [18:16:03] * tzatziki flags for James_F [18:16:18] ragesoss: Will ask it. [18:16:27] good question [18:17:06] (I found that particular proxy because it interacted with my twitter bot, and the proxy does seem to work, but I don't know much more than that.) [18:17:14] [Greg V.] [18:17:26] Last speakers were Zack, Aubrie, and Blanca [18:21:48] #goaitfied [18:21:51] gah [18:21:54] #goatified [18:21:55] Ha. [18:24:07] Reminder - if you have questions, send them James's way! [18:24:53] Thanks, foks. [18:25:18] Does that new translation interface use mobile layout for the side-by-side article views? It looked good! [18:25:41] ragesoss: Will ask that one too. :-) [18:31:34] have you compared the deletion rate of translations to deletion rate of articles on notable topics written from scratch? [18:31:53] Thanks for the question tgr, will ask it. [18:33:51] [Jacob] [18:35:25] This particular one, at least (gir.im) is a web-based proxy: you just put gir.im/ in from of a Wikipedia URL. [18:38:43] it also promotes a chrome plugin and android application, both of which are open source: https://github.com/girimproxy [18:39:39] thx [18:39:45] I appreciate that, even still, it might not be practical to vet any particular option well enough that we could safely recommend it... [18:39:47] [speaking as an involved person who isn't a lawyer: right, but again we can't really say anything about how safe or secure that pathway is. for all we know gir.im (or any other similar service) are by faulty design, bugs, compromise, or complicity, gathering the traffic data flowing through that proxy for the tr gov, which is one of a few reasons it's problematic for us to promote it. Another mi [18:39:53] ght be that it could be tricky for us to explicitly suggest doing something that's technically illegal there] [18:40:15] but, knowing as much as possible and learning which options are likely better than others seems like good things to keep up with. [18:40:22] Don't let a question like that color question just hang there! [18:41:19] Can I give some wiki love to joe for that performance? [18:41:29] CKoerner_WMF: No. ;-) [18:41:56] will people see/read the stuff in the youtube chat? [18:42:07] No. [18:42:12] I thought we disabled that? [18:42:31] nope, Erica is saying things :) [18:42:31] Well, it's enabled today [18:42:37] Shoutout to Quim for working with my team on a really tricky issue with good humor and much talent! [18:42:37] Erica says hi, offers supportive words for WMDE and WMCON [18:42:42] and it started with the Foundation account saying Hello! [18:42:44] (from Youtube) [18:47:22] Shout out/Wiki love to Sam Patton (online fundraising), who's baby boy was born just over a week ago :) (He's on leave) [18:47:25] It occurs to me that one way we could support people behind blocks would be to curate technical tools and instructions that would make it easy for people to set up their own multi-headed hydras of proxy options, especially web-based proxies like gir.im. [18:48:28] Thanks everyone. [18:49:13] I can't help but feel that the blocking authority (in Turkey, or wherever) would react similarly to Wikimedia communities when someone evades a block there. [18:52:43] There are always lots of locally-driven options that spring up when widespread blocks happen, it seems like. If we can give people solid and secure starting points for spinning up such things, that would a) make some people safer, b) make availability of such workarounds easier and more resilient, and c) build up more expertise in our community about best practices and important needs in the censorship intervention space.
