It's Wikimedia Activities time! Yay. [17:49:22] We'll be starting in just over 10 minutes' time. [17:50:45] Hi James_F. Are you the IRC spokesperson today? [17:50:56] I am, yes. [17:55:53] Hello! [17:56:39] We'll be starting in a few minutes' time. [17:57:07] As normal, I'll be taking your questions and asking them of the presenters at the end of the meeting. [17:57:24] If an idea, a though, a concern, or a question occurs, please do ask it here. [17:57:46] I will make sure it gets asked, and people in IRC might be able to answer it or refine the question in advance. [17:59:44] You can see our agenda at https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_monthly_activities_meetings/2019-07 [17:59:55] Francisco is facilitating this month. [18:02:46] Yay, Smithsonian! [18:10:24] I have a meta-comment about the meeting. I can understand the audio but the quality could use improvement. Is this something that can be addressed for the next month's Activities Meeting? [18:11:24] Pine: Is it low bandwidth? Low quality? Low volume? What would we need to address? [18:11:30] I suspect that's partly due to everyone dialing in this month, and having a variety of connection quality/home A/V equipment [18:11:55] Yeah, Danny's sound is cutting in and out a bit. [18:11:56] Quality of microphones may be part of the issue. Agree with Mark. [18:12:06] almost certainly a function of "remote week" [18:12:40] we take our San Francisco A/V team for granted until we have to go without them ;) [18:13:17] yeah this only sounds worse because they're not using real mics here [18:13:24] just laptop mics or whatever [18:13:31] Imaginary microphones! [18:13:33] What a world [18:13:37] heh [18:13:39] Some of us have real mics for A/V stuff. ;-) [18:13:43] OK. I think that quality of mics is something to work on for better remote participation. [18:13:53] yeah not much can be done about that [18:14:00] unless we want to send every staffer a mic :D [18:14:09] We could change remote weeks to not clash with Activities. [18:14:20] we still have remote presentations [18:14:40] Yes, but that would halve the number of people we'd need to issue with good mics. [18:15:32] "halve" not sure [18:15:33] Greg's got a good mic [18:16:08] hyopothesis: mic quality correlates with % time spent remote [18:16:17] lol :D [18:16:21] Greg's office-based [18:16:22] Any questions for the presenters? [18:16:52] My mic's not bad and I'm in the office on average 6 days a week. :-) [18:17:10] * J-Mo makes a note to lecture James_F on how probability works :P [18:17:33] (But none of you will get a chance to hear me unless you're going to get me to pose a question.) [18:17:44] ooh incentive [18:17:52] J-Mo: So your H0 is that it's negatively correlated? I'm confused. :-) [18:18:04] New Wikimedia Research project: quality of staff microphones. [18:18:06] i think he's saying there are always exceptions [18:18:19] uh-oh. Reviewer #2 rears his head! [18:18:32] :P [18:18:38] I'm suggesting that n is too small to make population assertions. [18:19:10] woo! super excited for a less boring office wall. \o/ [18:19:15] I usually turn to nettrom when I need to do a power analysis. I guess that means I need to make him a co-author [18:21:17] Pine: It's a tough problem to solve, for sure. USB mics are generally pretty bad. [18:21:45] webrtc also compresses the audio pretty heavily [18:22:13] I think that loaning out high quality mics to planned speakers could be good. [18:23:07] Thought of that...but then the speaker needs to know how to use a professional microphone in the correct acoustic enviornment [18:23:51] And we need to spend hundreds of dollars shipping expensive equipment which is subject to customs issues around the world [18:24:35] Still no questions? [18:25:05] I don't think that super expensive mics would be necessary. Maybe $80 mics. [18:25:16] They could buy locally and expense it [18:30:54] Love the laser flare eyes in the Thailand Strategy Summit pic! [18:31:08] * James_F grins. [18:34:05] Last call for questions. [18:35:21] WikiLove shouts? [18:36:03] Wiki love to the legal team for their work on resolving the turkey block [18:36:22] Yes! [18:37:11] Wikilove for the English Wikipedia Arbitration Committee members and clerks for their very many hours and lots of effort for the community. [18:37:59] Thanks all!
