[18:57:46] mgerlach: re the direction for research on understanding readers, I had a brief chat with Jon Katz yesterday. I told him you may reach out to him and Josh Minor to talk more. I asked him: what do you see as readership product development in the coming 2 years as things stand now. here is what he said. [18:58:30] they think that they know the problems for readers, at least some broad strokes to help them build product for them. The two things they are thinking ot tackle are: [18:59:48] Trust: (this is more along the lines of discussions Jonathan brought up in our last meeting and we heard during all-hands.) iOS is doing experiments with reader trust and what information readers can benefit from knowing in terms of how Wikipedia works. [19:02:33] Complexity of text and background: we know the current representation of content on Wikipedia doesn't work for (potential and some current) readers. For example, you may need background knowledge to be able to understand a specific part of the article. Or the text may be just too complicated for you to understand. [19:03:46] related to the last point is the idea of curriculum development (which he labeled as complex). There, the question is what you show to the reader, in what sequence, and at what level of complexity. [19:04:34] there is also some explorations around Simple English and trying to see how/if that can be used for finding less complex text. [19:05:07] the research question is not very clear to me at the moment. There are a lot of possiblities. I encourage you to talk with JK about it further and we can talk more next week. [19:06:07] the trust part can be more closely related to what it means to be an informed reader in specific topics, depending on the angle they're going at it. See if you want to join the meeting J-Mo et al are organizing to talk more with iOS. [19:06:17] that's all on my end, I think. [19:06:22] leila: ok thanks, that is helpful. I will then reach out to JK to dig deeper to connect to research [19:06:53] mgerlach: sounds good. [19:07:13] miriam_: I have something for you, too, :D from conversations with Jon Katz. [19:07:33] I was planning to join j-mo's meeting in any case [19:07:56] woo hoo! [19:08:17] miriam_: product wants to see image work during FY21. Jon suggested that you stay in close communication with Amanda B as she can route you to the right people as needed. [19:08:37] trust is also part of the desktop refresh (Alex H. + Olga). We might talk to them at some point as well; I'm coordinating re: email right now [19:08:48] J-Mo: great. [23:43:19] * leila boils tea and gets ready for the (hopefully) final sprint of the day on annual planning.
