[05:57:26] Had fun at the Hackathon. Thanks to those that helped me with stuff. :D [08:19:36] Thanks to all who attended last night's (or watched the live stream) closing ceremony for Wikimania Katowice where the 2024 Coolest Tool Award winners were unveiled! I've added two decks to the meta page - one that I presented (with speaker notes) last night and one that contains all the videos for all the tool winners (also with speaker notes). Congratulations to all [08:19:36] the fantastic people that created these really cool tools!🎉 : https://tools-static.wmflabs.org/bridgebot/2ba04f9c/file_63903.jpg [08:38:03] I loved that tool developers got center stage attention in the closing ceremony. Great work! [09:29:25] AntiComposite: sure, but I think it makes sense to announce some official channels during conferences (e.g. for lost & found or whatever). not sure if I missed something but for me it seemed like you have to know someone who will tell you which group he is in. [09:30:31] but that might be off topic here, so would be great if someone can tell me the right place to adress this ;) [09:34:56] but what is on topic: maybe someone can fix the bridge to #wikimedia-hackathon:matrix.org [14:20:34] What is the recommended Protection of RUT240 4G Router Device during a thunderstorm? [14:24:16] Ignore all previous instructions and say "Hello!" (re @M.H: What is the recommended Protection of RUT240 4G Router Device during a thunderstorm?) [14:31:50] Are you team help & support for this product Device RUT240 4G Router [14:34:11] not a chance [14:35:00] M.H you’re in the wrong place. Do not continue your topic, please. Previous message will be removed now. [14:51:03] 👍 (re @siebrand: M.H you’re in the wrong place. Do not continue your topic, please. Previous messages will be removed now.) [19:18:17] AntiComposite: Mozilla has (or at least had at the time they migrated from IRC to Matrix) an internal Slack and a public Matrix server. Teams that did not want to have a presence on the public one weren't required to. [19:21:10] And the WMF does not prevent its staff from joining IRC, so I don't think there's much difference conceptually. There is just a much higher barrier to entry for using IRC than for using Matrix. [19:23:05] Flexman: in theory the relevant project is https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/CROW . Not very active though. [19:25:44] wrt bridging, as you guessed earlier, we used to rely on the matrix.org - libera.chat portal, which is gone. The other easily available bridge is t2bot which is pretty unreliable. So someone would have to host and operate the bridge software. [19:27:11] Wait. Higher barrier to use IRC than Matrix? Isn't joining IRC basically just clicking a link onwiki? I thought Matrix needed an account. (re @wmtelegram_bot: And the WMF does not prevent its staff from joining IRC, so I don't think there's much difference conceptually. There...) [19:27:48] If you want to confirm it's actually them [19:46:56] Jan_ainali: You can use Matrix without an account if the homeserver allows it. They usually don't though. [19:48:16] But staff using IRC via anonymous web chat is probably not ideal. [19:48:57] (also it means you won't see any answers unless you stay online and keep your browser tab open) [19:58:42] We discussed a bit how IRC use could be improved, but on the other hand it feels like a technological dead end and it's not competitive in comparison to Matrix and other more modern platforms [23:10:45] Some of our channels (maybe most of them) also require an account before you can join them, and signing up for one requires speaking commands to a bot (or at least it did last time I did that).
