This is a support channel, no need to justify asking for support. 12:59 < AryehGregor> Anyway, in response: MediaWiki is not designed for enterprises and governments, it's designed for Wikipedia. Using it for sites that are greatly unlike Wikipedia will pose serious problems. 12:59 < tuxcrafter> i have such big wishes for wikipedia to become usable for enterprises and govermentw 12:59 < AryehGregor> We don't have enough developers interested in supporting that. 13:00 < tuxcrafter> currently we spend large amounts of time and money on confluence and xwiki 13:00 < AryehGregor> If you want it to happen, get us people who are willing to sign up for commit access and add the features they need. 13:00 < AryehGregor> Most of us are from Wikipedia and don't know what enterprise/government need, and aren't willing to invest the time if we did. 13:01 < tuxcrafter> its such a shame 13:01 < tuxcrafter> its makes me really sad 13:01 < AryehGregor> Enterprise and government have to pay for expensive software because they're used to it. 13:02 < AryehGregor> If they said "No, this is stupid, let's just hack our own stuff and we'll save money in the long term", they could do that. 13:02 < AryehGregor> But they have enough money that they don't. 13:02 < AryehGregor> Wikipedia has basically no money, so expensive commercial software is much less attractive. 13:02 < flyingparchment> wikipedia also has a bizarre policy where they only use free software, no matter how crap it is. (except sometimes a magical exception is made) 13:03 < tuxcrafter> but if we say we want to pay 30.000 euro to get enterprice acls spaces (not discussing if this is usable) and we want a copy paste open document support in mediawiki 13:03 < AryehGregor> Like Solaris? 13:03 < tuxcrafter> what is wanted to make it happen... 13:03 < AryehGregor> tuxcrafter, you just have to hire the necessary programmers. That's how open-source works. If you want something done, do it yourself. 13:04 < tuxcrafter> so media wiki can serve both environments 13:04 < tuxcrafter> AryehGregor: well there must be offical support from the core of mediawiki 13:04 < tuxcrafter> if we want to make acls default in the core not a plugin... 13:05 < tuxcrafter> i am also affraid mediawiki is going to miss the boot 13:05 < tuxcrafter> we are now investing in xwiki developers 13:05 < AryehGregor> tuxcrafter, you have to hire people and get them commit access, so they can commit the features. 13:05 < tuxcrafter> because they are willing to add these features when paid 13:05 < AryehGregor> Anyone can request commit access. 13:05 < AryehGregor> Of course, you have to realize that it will cost more and take longer to get the code in a form where we'll accept it. 13:05 < tuxcrafter> i am willing to hire already excisting media wiki people 13:06 < AryehGregor> Any that are available for hire have already been hired by Wikimedia, AFAIK. 13:06 < werdna> well, you could offer more :) 13:07 < AryehGregor> Probably. 13:07 < werdna> AryehGregor: why haven't you been hired yet, incidentally? 13:08 < AryehGregor> Because I'm in a Ph.D. program right now and don't want to drop out. 13:08 < tuxcrafter> hmms i think i am going to make a set of functional demands that needs to be included in mediawiki to make ik work for govermenns 13:08 < AryehGregor> Anyway, the point is, in typical open-source software it's all up to you. No one is going to give you reliable paid support or feature-adding here. You have to do the work to find people who will add the features for you, and get them included in core. 13:08 < werdna> fair enough, going to ask for some work when you finish? 13:08 < AryehGregor> werdna, typically a Ph.D. is followed by postdocs.
