[04:20:34] not sure what you mean [04:21:03] I was originally thinking about tooltips, pretty much. So when you hovered over parts of the code, it could explain what it does. [04:21:15] But then I was thinking about the ability to comment on individual lines of code, I guess. [04:21:22] And then I got lost in my own thoughts. [04:21:38] https://test2.wikipedia.org/wiki/Module:TicTacToe [04:21:47] I was thinking about better ways to document/explain that. Tooltips came to mind. [04:22:32] You could do explanations (definitions) of the technical terms or you could do annotations explaining what the code does in English, on hover. Maybe. [04:22:47] I'm worried about the learning curve of Lua. [05:04:40] 03(mod) Scribunto should support global module invocations - 10https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/39610 +comment (10Tim Starling) [05:06:14] I feel like modules have to either fully embrace being wiki pages/templates or not. But they're kind of half-assing right now. [05:09:57] Brooke: Could this not be accomplished by commenting fully? (referring back to tooltips/annotation) [05:10:18] Maybe. [05:10:33] You fuck up the signal to noise ratio when reading the code. [05:10:45] That's the problem with fully commenting. [05:11:01] Suddenly you can't see the damn code because each line is wrapped in a mountain of grey text. [05:11:11] Alternately gray text. [05:11:21] Hi jdlrobson. [05:13:21] Brooke: Maybe the extension could pull comments out manually, and put them adjacent to the text as single, expandable lines? [05:13:36] Maybe. [05:13:54] There's the question of whether you want annotation capabilities generally or just as a tool for specific documentation. [05:13:55] I know I'm expanding TimStarling's workload without knowing the effort involved, but it's just an idea :) [05:14:00] I'm not sure how important the capability is generally. [05:14:37] Brooke: Plus there are other problems with that....messy line numbers not matching up, most notably [05:14:57] Right. [05:15:12] I was originally thinking about tooltips, pretty much. So when you hovered over parts of the code, it could explain what it does. [05:15:32] it's an interesting idea, but a bit redundant with normal comments [05:15:52] TimStarling: See above notes about signal-to-noise ratio [05:16:00] I put some notes here about it: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Scribunto/Brainstorming [05:16:05] (though it's nothing coders haven't dealt with for decades anyway) [05:16:10] have you ever read about literate programming? [05:16:27] I was just saying to Mark, it may make sense as a silly JavaScript thing, not as a feature of Scribunto. [05:16:41] it was a fairly early idea for tight integration of lengthy documentation with the code it documents [05:16:43] A gadget on MediaWiki.org for certain doc pages, I mean. [05:16:49] I haven't. [05:17:00] based on text filtering, similar to how we use doc comments now [05:17:12] I feel like I've seen this article previously. But module redirects? [05:23:41] yes, redirects are supported [05:23:48] it actually calls back to the parser to get module text [05:23:57] Heh... [05:24:03] so if you had interwiki transclusion, you would automatically get interwiki modules [05:24:18] So the redirects work, but creating a redirect requires ignoring the error. [05:24:35] And it doesn't parse correctly. So it's back to limiting scope of syntax highlighting problem. [05:24:35] supported but untested I guess [05:25:04] Oh, it does behave like a redirect. Does deleteBatch.php also delete files from the image directory? (Sorry if this message is duplicated, something wrong has happened with my IRC client) [06:55:07] TimStarling: storing an additional file is possibly simpler than hacking the FileRepo hierarchy [06:55:31] I think I will hack OggHandler to not require a File object [06:55:38] * Aaron|home likes how some foreign repos extend local ones... [06:55:43] because like I say, it's only using $file->getTitle() [06:55:49] I'll just let it accept a Title [06:56:05] or false, which is what's really needed here, there's no description page [06:56:05] and were will it get the length? [06:56:22] that is yet to be decided [06:57:19] so it seems like either additional metadata files or the DB [07:00:09] or memcached, but refilling it would require loading a potentially multimegabyte file from swift and scanning the whole thing in PHP [07:00:27] yeah, that's why I didn't say memcached [07:00:47] it could help as an auxiliary [07:01:19] I was imagining the post-power outage cache-slam scenario ;) [07:01:59] Vi sitter i Ventrilo och spelar DotA... [08:59:41] beli: from my experience they're all pretty LTS [09:00:18] and besides upgrading as new versions come along is trouble-free unless you've got some extensions that may break [09:02:41] New patchset: Tobias Gritschacher; "refactoring PageObjects" [mediawiki/extensions/Wikibase] (master) - https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/21189 [09:02:57] jubo2: what i have seen since .17....that there have been bigger adjustments to the templates...and i don't want to adjust design each time. i want to stick with .18 now, but cannot find a timeline for security support of this release [09:05:57] I've been using MediaWiki since it was called Wikipedia Phase III .. MW is really secure because it is so well designed [09:08:12] Who'd have thought that one of the biggest and most important sites on the internet is run with PHP .. [09:08:49] I was always taught that "Gotta do it in C or ASM if you want fast running software." [09:10:24] jubo2: designed? heh. you funny. [09:12:02] DrEeevil: you are disputing that there are inherently good software design patterns and bad software design patterns ..?? [09:12:41] jubo2: from my rum-fueled interactions with the MW codebase I wonder how it works at all [09:13:31] I upgraded 8 major revisions from 1.10.X to 1.18.2 in one short run [09:13:54] with only one glitch that needed fixing ( comment out a line of sql ) [09:14:17] if that isn't a hallmark of well designed software then I don't know what is [09:14:22] lucky you [09:14:43] I've tried upgrading 1.17 to 1.19, and there's just too much subtle breakage included [09:15:03] maybe that's related to using a few plugins that add basic functionality :) [09:15:55] plugins ? you mean extensions ? [09:16:07] yes [09:16:18] I think the problem with extensions is not adding 'em but removing 'em if I've understood right [09:16:39] the extension-framework is so versatile [09:16:53] for me the way forward is write a custom app (most likely django) that does things sanely [09:17:02] python ehh ? [09:17:17] I am thinking of into Ruby ( especially on rails ) [09:17:25] ugh no [09:17:29] I want progress, not just change [09:17:42] I like learning human languages [09:17:43] the ruby ecosystem is infected with lolcode [09:17:59] I do better spaghetti in the kitchen then atk [09:18:01] hmm, after 4 or 5 it gets quite tedious with natural languages [09:19:30] DrEeevil: but there is ruby gems library repository where you can require x.y <= wanted_version <= z.v [09:19:36] fuuuuu [09:19:42] gem is a retarded idiotic FAIL [09:19:51] and RVM is a hack to make it almost work [09:20:03] I'm unwilling to deal with that level of not-understanding [09:21:43] DrEeevil: zh."Duibuchi, Ni hui shuo Ying wen ma?" == en."Excuse me, Do You speak English?" [09:21:53] DrEeevil: now you teach me something useful about computers [09:22:29] jubo2: wo bu zhidao. Ni shi zhongguo ren ma? [09:23:17] bu shi zhongguo. wo shi finnguo ren. [09:23:48] :) [09:23:58] I am just a silly laowai hiding in Shanghai [09:24:01] Women bu shi Ameriguo ren. Women shi Finnguoren. Buyao pai! Buyao pai! P-; [09:24:32] my textbook claims "mei guo ren" for american, btw [09:24:51] DrEeevil: merci pour vos corrections [09:25:11] DrEeevil: You speak native Shangainese ? [09:25:14] jubo2: de rien, monsieur. [09:25:30] no, I'm barely able to communicate in mandarin, haven't even attempted to learn shanghainese [09:25:45] 03(mod) Uninstall PrefSwitch extension from Wikimedia wikis - 10https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/37364 +comment (10Liangent) [09:25:46] expat ? [09:26:06] depat ;) I don't claim to belong to any country [09:27:34] there is this one guy in our evening-school ... I think he's the only one of us with grand-children, he speaks fluent mandarin, and with fluent I mean fluent enough that you can conduct business negotiations in Mandarin [09:29:08] There are two finns who speak and one chinese who ( surprise ) speaks so I have excellent opportunity to apply into basic conversing in mandarin as I learn in the Chinese 101 I'm taking at the uni lang centre [09:29:18] :) [09:29:41] nice [09:30:42] yeah.. I have Mon-Thu evening business school and then Chinese at the uni on Friday.. now just needs to find part-time job and I'm pretty much set [09:32:24] 03(FIXED) Comments: Server must reject comments if they come from users without "comment" right. - 10https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/34303 +comment (10Jack Phoenix) [09:32:27] DrEeevil: fullack [09:32:39] I sorta think I shouldn't distract myself with Chinese but focus on French.. Then again I'm doing a little of both and they seem to have no interactions [09:32:41] actually.. [09:33:17] jubo2: yeah, they are quite independent [09:33:30] * DrEeevil can handle .en .de .nl .fr at least [09:34:02] While UKsians were busy trading opium for tea, silk and silver the French were sending non-profit missionaries to china .. now get this concequence.. I think the Chinese -> French translations are much more understandable [09:34:52] * jubo2 does Finnish, English, Swedish, French and little of Russian, German and Chinese hopefully soon [09:35:22] DrEeevil: I've been thinking of into Estonian.. that'd be my 8th lang [09:35:37] jubo2: isn't that like a dialect of finnish? ;) [09:35:54] It's so easy for a Finn to learn, it is so closely related to our language [09:36:24] DrEeevil: negative. Thanks! [12:53:54] Jarry1250: My first 3 commits were ok/merged and from then on, when I had a comment for fix I created a new commit instead of rebase (probably) so now I have 6 pending commits that are not merged due to comments [12:56:26] jimkont: You mean you never amended any of your commits, only submitted new ones? That could result in a bloated history. What I'd do nowis to leave your new commit in whatever branch, checkout master, pull to make sure it's up-to-date, checkout a new branch, cherry-pick the commit, and push for review. [12:56:35] Others may have better ideas: my gitfu isn't the strongest. [13:01:51] Jarry1250: Yep, it's embarrassing now but that's exactly what I did, a new commit to fix the previous one. [16:57:55] sumanah: Honestly? I can see why, if you took a two-second look at the page and saw one thing or another, you might make a snap judgment. But this isn't the place for snap judgments. [16:58:13] ashish_d: Yeah, that would be fine too [16:59:06] I think the "annoying" part of Brian's comment was that if you regenerate, then if you generate a token, step on a csrf that regenerates a new token, then try to authenticate, your token is no longer valid [16:59:32] But doing a separate token would prevent that too-- and tokens are easy enough in the api [16:59:58] Yeah, no extra labour for Edit token [17:00:05] 03(mod) Bad positioning of scanned image beside text - 10https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/24896 +comment (10Tpt) [17:00:29] New patchset: Jens Ohlig; "Renamed ItemByLabel to "ItemDisambiguation"" [mediawiki/extensions/Wikibase] (master) - https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/21190 [17:00:50] marktraceur: "I don't understand why people get so up in arms about little bugs and config changes." Ive been working through the link you provided me but continuous errors after errors that I've been working one-by-one. [21:39:48] Lcawte: I think that's one of the ones that is too big and that WMDE is having trouble sizing down to get on Commons [21:39:58] FuRoSh: please do let us know what the specific errors are [21:40:02] mediawiki-l might also be helpful [21:40:03] Now at a child pid 6127 exit signal Segmentation fault (11). [21:40:05] Ah, it was Tim, I thought so... [21:40:06] !lists | FuRoSh [21:40:06] FuRoSh: mediawiki-l and wikitech-l are the primary mailing lists for MediaWiki-related issues. See https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Mailing_lists for details. [21:40:31] FuRoSh: lots of sysadmins who run MW installs read & answer questions on mediawiki-l [21:40:33] paste bin- http://pastebin.com/DJ1Wf2sK [21:40:46] Oh /fun/... segfaults [21:40:48] Amgine: ^ maybe you can help FuRoSh? [21:41:07] Lcawte: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Hackathon_Berlin_2012 has the ones that are on Commons now [21:41:19] Oh... not that kind of segfault [21:41:21] [21:42:28] FuRoSh: Extension:ExtensionManager isn't being maintained anymore... since you're doing something as hard as a 1.8 -> 1.19 upgrade how about dropping that extension. [21:43:27] DanielFriesen: thanks for your response, I am adding them based on previous errors I am running into. First started with the SecureHTML errors. [21:44:20] DanielFriesen: I searched for this error and tried to implement the suggested resolutions. But again, just keep finding myself digging and digging =) [21:44:29] FuRoSh: Also includes/ObjectCache.php doesn't exist. Sounds like you're running into the issue of extracting a new version of MW over top of an old one and having old config code that causes the old stuff to be loaded leading to two versions of MediaWiki doing a head on collision. [21:44:29] FuRoSh: did you back up your databases? [21:44:59] Amgine: oh yea, I am actually working with a seperate DB that I took from main DB and restored as testdb. [21:45:06] * DanielFriesen needs something to eat [21:45:45] DanielFriesen: yes I agreew with what you just wrote. [21:46:08] I agree with DanielFriesen then: you may want to try a clean install, and then re-add current versions of extensions? [21:46:48] I decided to do this because I read this: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Upgrading#How_do_I_upgrade_from_a_really_old_version.3F_In_one_step.2C_or_in_several_steps.3F%20/ [21:46:55] sorry for long paste... [21:47:48] I pointed FuRoSh to that [21:47:49] I am actually doing: 1. Moving old wiki server to new wiki server, 2. upgrading individual wikis to newer version on new server. 1 of 2 is done and completed. Updating them is where im having issues. [21:47:54] maybe I was mistaken! /o\ [21:48:39] I figured this was the best course though sumanah, as I thought it would be better than taking 1.8.4 through each release. just seemed to not make sense. Basically a post made purely so that the topic is 'bump[ed]' back to the start of the list of posts. [22:06:44] I presume that your implication is that I was "bumping" these lists to get more activity on them? [22:08:13] No no... [22:36:15] Amgine: after update.php is complete, how would I go about replacing extensions I had previously? for instance SecureHTML [22:36:58] That I am less sure about. You will want to check which of the extensions are current to 1.19, and install them *one at a time*. [22:37:02] Testing after each. [22:37:18] we also had YPAuth extension for using our NIS yp domain. Not sure if this was something no-longer admin created or known extension.
