[04:20:57] <[1]hypergrove> hello, i am moving my wiki to a new server, and would like to avoid uploading all images individually. I have exported all file: pages from the old wiki, and want to move the entire images/ directory over... Will I run into problems if I copy all files/directories from the old image/ directory, and then import the file: pages in the xml file that i've exported? I have a problem with the client cache, if I browse the mediawiki I can only view a page once, then afterwards no content is set to the browser, because it should have cached the page, however the brower just shows a blank page. [09:08:19] if I make a change in the LocalSettings.php or close my brower I can view all my pages again (once). [09:11:56] Its the same in both firefox and chrome, if I look at the request in wireshark, these headers exists when I don't see the page: If-Modified-Since: Mon, 26 Nov 2012 07:42:33 GMT Cache-Control: max-age=0 [09:12:45] If I set: Pragma: no-cache Cache-Control: no-cache, then the page is servered. [15:24:06] That kind of thing, especially in a bug tracker used for wikis, should just be a lot more obvious. >.< [15:24:21] BBLN: have you already checked the archives of https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/xmldatadumps-l for tips? [15:24:48] BBLN: I don't know that much about how to speed up these kinds of imports ..... [15:24:54] Isarra, I can probably only say: Feel free to improve the documentation that we have on the wiki... [15:25:21] also andre__ after we upgrade bugzilla it'll be a little easier to improve the skin so this kind of stuff is easier to find? [15:25:22] Isarra: if we ever manage to upgrade Bugzilla to a newer version this info will be shown between the comments, not hidden under a "History" link. [15:25:23] * sumanah hopes [15:25:25] aha! [15:25:27] For that kind of thing, believe me, documentation will not help. It should be there and it should stand out, plain and simple. [15:25:28] coooool [15:25:28] BBLN: i think that pages are being parsed when you impor them, no? [15:25:30] by default, yes. [15:25:46] BBLN: if they are being parser, no wonder it's taking ages [15:26:06] being parsed* [15:26:06] isn't there a way to dump the pages into the database without using an importer? [15:26:16] just copying and pasting? I heard about this in this channel last week I think [15:26:21] Anyway, andre__, you were the one who changed this bug, so may I just ask you now? [15:26:28] to copy and paste the db, I mean [15:26:30] but i dunno, maybe msdumper is smarted than maintenance/importDump.php [15:26:39] mwdumper* damn typos [15:26:46] smarter* [15:27:20] Although I guess another question would be if one bug is to be fixed, but only partly, should that bug be updated to reflect the fix, or should another one be submitted? [15:28:42] Although given that in this case said fix has yet to be merged, and gerrit ties changesets to bugs, having the bug updated to not apply to the change seems... strange. [15:29:13] * Ulfr is simply happier not thinking about logistics like that [15:30:14] Is that how it's done? Mazel tov! [15:52:24] there's not automated way i'm aware of [15:52:41] what I'm doing right now to achieve that is I'm embedding all the pages to the frontpage [15:52:52] and using the right headline levels [15:53:17] then I use javascript to move the Table of Contents to my sidebar [15:53:41] but it's more than dodgy, don't you think ;) [15:53:58] ugh [15:54:00] yes, quite [15:54:20] the sidebar itself can be edited at [[mediawiki:sidebar]] [15:54:27] at least I have a proper navigational menu that is former automatically [15:54:29] you'll have to do it manually, but once it's done, it's done [15:55:00] I don't want to add every page to the navigation bar every time I make a new one [15:55:02] sumanah - thanks, and thanks! [15:55:03] https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Interface/Sidebar [15:55:21] i don't know how you could achieve this, then, sorry [15:55:39] New patchset: Matthias Mullie; "Refactor AFT backend" [mediawiki/extensions/ArticleFeedbackv5] (master) - https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/24264 [15:57:06] yeah the problem is that the people that contribute to the wiki can't be asked to remember to do all that kind of labour, actually, the task of adding a page should be as fluent operation as possible [15:58:00] Yaron: Also, the folks at http://codelesson.com/ were interested in finding someone to teach an online class about basic MediaWiki installation and administration. Now that you've literally written the book on the subject, maybe you're interested in teaching that (and getting some of the lesson fees of course) [15:58:57] Kafetist: there is [[special:allpages]] [15:58:57] sumanah: sure, that could be interesting. Should I contact them, or what? [15:59:10] Yaron: I'll email them introducing you. [15:59:29] Kafetist: you could make an extension that would insert links to them to the sidebar, i guess [15:59:35] MatmaRex, because I'm receiving such special help from this channel, I'm gonna contribute my work when I'm done :) [15:59:45] Kafetist: yay! [16:00:21] sumanah the official enthusiast :) [16:00:24] New patchset: Matthias Mullie; "Revert "Bug 42057 - Feedback link on article pages"" [mediawiki/extensions/ArticleFeedbackv5] (master) - https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/35167 [16:00:26] :) [16:00:31] love the dedication there! [16:01:02] Change merged: Matthias Mullie; [mediawiki/extensions/ArticleFeedbackv5] (master) - https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/35167 [16:01:14] sumanah: cool, thanks. [16:06:51] Kafetist: i don't know what your workflow is, but it is possible to insert default text into the edit area when you're creating a page [16:07:24] sumanah: I think with bugtriage WOP applications I'm afraid to end up with the usual chicken-and-egg problem of open source. Student says "give me very specific tasks and hold my hand" and mentor says "pick whatever you want from this list here, find your way, and if you have specific questions ask"... :-/ [16:07:25] Kafetist: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Parameters_to_index.php#Options_affecting_the_edit_form, "preload" [16:07:41] Kafetist: or, well, you could always write an extension (or look for one) [16:08:18] andre__: I think 1 well-specified microtask as a starter is ok, to break that particular deadlock, and you can judge how resourceful the student is on doing that one task including asking smart questions [16:08:42] sumanah, yeah, good idea. [22:31:05] Isarra sumanah this sort of tools evaluation is a classic exercise in the Enterprise world, google for "build or buy software". Since we're constrained to open software (mostly) we didn't spend much effort on what might be available from the big commercial vendors, nor did we look far into what it would take to build exactly the right thing from scratch. Enterprise does that all the time. [22:31:49] And hey, ideally we'd... well, we'd replace gerrit. [22:31:57] I mean, how would that not be wonderful? [22:32:18] Replacing gerrit would be very, very useful. [22:32:26] I find it so unlikely that there's an alternative in Jan-March 2013 that is suitable for us that wasn't suitable in August 2012. [22:32:37] When we did the last evaluation. Working on some part of that does sound like a 3-month project [22:34:56] new gerrit versions are just carrots :P [22:35:06] read the Gerrit evaluation page, look at the alternatives that came close, pick one (people enjoyed using Phabricator) and look into fixing it up [22:35:51] does that make sense?
