[00:39:52] !exporttemplates [00:39:53] To copy templates from Wikipedia, use Special:Export and check the "Include templates" option to get all the sub-templates, then upload the file with Special:Import on your wiki. You'll also likely have to install the ParserFunctions extension and install/enable HTML tidy. You also might need some CSS from Wikipedia's Common.css and Monobook.css. You'll also need a lot of patience. [06:48:51] anyone active here? [06:49:19] maybe [06:52:42] i was wondering if the parsoid / visual editor stuff could be of any use for those of us wishing to convert wikitext markup to html [06:52:51] i keep wondering where and how to ask .. [06:55:42] i've been working on a node.js tool that pulls data out of plain old dump files [06:57:59] hippietrail: yes, it's useful [06:59:04] ori-l - do you know are people already using it for this or where i should look to start [06:59:04] parsoid is tested against dumps, so if you look at the test suite you'll find code for retrieving articles from dumps and serializing it to HTML. [06:59:48] would that require me to have a full mediawiki + PHP + mysql install? [07:01:05] i've read the easy to find docs on parsoid and for me they seem to lead nowhere - i'm now googling for the stuff you've mentioned ... [07:01:27] 03(mod) Links to translatable pages are broken on Special:Translate - 10https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/44972 +comment (10niklas.laxstrom) [07:01:29] 1) people already using it for this -- yes, though with a different purpose in mind (they're looking to evaluate on an ongoing basis parsoid's suitability for replacing or augmenting the parsing code in mediawiki.) but no, it has not (to my knowledge) been packaged as a standalone tool for htmlizing dumps. [07:02:18] 2) it does not require mediawiki/php/mysql. parsoid is currently implemented in javascript that is designed to run on v8 generally and node.js specifically (afaik, I'm not very involved with the project). [07:03:20] the current parsoid codebase resolves template references using API requests, so you can use it either by pointing it against a real API [07:03:24] oh that sound just like what i'm looking for! [07:04:00] or by wrapping a database dump with an access layer that mocks out the mediawiki API, which has been done before. [07:04:37] i'm offline a lot due to high internet prices in australia or backbacking around the world - so i'm very interested in helping out with offline support - but not the current projects like okawix that are not my cup of tea for various reasons [07:05:11] yes i did a partial mocking layer a couple of years ago in PHP [07:05:29] i'll get you a couple of links to get you started, hang on. [07:06:04] for getting the wikitext of pages and templates i have no problems - implemented it a bunch of times over the years in different languages - but the actual parsing is the big problem to get right [07:06:13] thanks ori-l! [07:06:33] this _should_ be installable using npm: https://github.com/wikimedia/mediawiki-extensions-Parsoid/tree/master/js [07:06:57] the README claims it should be, at any rate. [11:35:00] * Dantman is starting to think that wikidata's plan of using sites with global identifiers is the complete wrong way to go about doing this. [11:36:02] For such an open project I'm starting to think that choice is actually going to be more of a lock in than something open. [11:37:57] Dantman: got a better plan ? :-D [11:38:13] feel free to talk with them in #wikimedia-wikidata [11:38:45] 03(mod) [OPS] Add disk I/O to ganglia reports - 10https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/36994 +ops; summary (10Antoine "hashar" Musso) [11:41:23] I'm just starting to think that the need for wikis using the data to share the same sites data would be a lock in. Locking any wiki that wants to use wikidata data into the whatever identifiers are used where the wikidata server is located. [11:42:52] The proper thing to do would be to ditch the notion that everything should be global. Every client using the data would simply keep a copy of whatever interwiki mappings the wikidata source using. [11:43:17] Instead of having to share the sites, the mapping data would be completely separate from the local wiki's interwiki/sites data. [15:03:52] It's been about 5 years since I've set up a mediawiki, and I can't tell if the packaging is just bad or if I'm doing something wrong. [15:04:21] !packages [15:04:22] Many Linux distributions provide MediaWiki in a packaged format for that distribution. These packages typically contain obsolete and unsupported versions of MediaWiki, also they like to move around files, change the files, and do other batshit insane things. You'll get the best support here if you install MediaWiki directly from one of our tarballs, available at http://www.mediawiki.org/ [15:04:41] 1.19.2 is hardly obsolete or unsupported [15:05:19] but the rest is true [15:05:31] that's what I'm figuring [15:05:44] DanielK_WMDE, did you see https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/#/c/37666/2/includes/content/TextContent.php [15:05:46] ?
