[00:48:47] andre__: very very late comment. I think the main problem with mw-vagrant on various linux distros is that the version of Vagrant shipped by the distro is often very old. The instructions we give suggest using the rpms/debs provided by Vagrant directly. There are also stupid compile issues with the vbguest plugin that I'm trying to kill in https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/#/c/320277/ [00:49:56] the 64-bit processor restriction basically comes from running software to match WMF production [00:51:09] the VT-x restriction comes from VirtualBox needing hardware support to run the 64bit base image [01:45:29] bd808: ah, thanks for the elaboration! [01:45:29] (jayvdb ^ might also consider that explanation interesting as he brought that up initially here) [03:47:55] https://github.com/wikimedia/mediawiki/tree/master/maintenance/dev is a good way for people with lower spec computers (or just don't want to use vagrant) to very quickly get started with MW [07:20:40] legoktm: the beginner-ish task requires they use Vagrant, iirc [07:22:16] https://codein.withgoogle.com/tasks/5785685814411264/ [07:22:22] it is marked as a beginner task [07:25:46] bd808: I tried using the fedora 25 packages, and also the rpms provided by Vagrant directly. no luck. Lots of incompatibilities throughout the stack, including even mediawiki requiring a version of bundler which was incompatible with the system one, and that was when I through my hands in the air and tried a different machine. [07:27:35] I didnt keep a lot of notes, but roughly speaking most of the time the OS provided version was greater than the version required by the Wikimedia software [07:29:13] hence I am wondering if it might be more sensible to run all of if it a Ruby virtual env [09:18:56] I cannot access etytree-1.etytree.eqiad.wmflabs [09:19:02] or epantaleo@primary.bastion.wmflabs.org [09:19:17] it says Permission denied (publickey). [09:49:12] jayvdb: the task title is called "Set up your MediaWiki development environment and upload a screenshot of a MediaWiki extension" so I think we should allow people to set up MW + deps manually if they choose to do so (just warn them it might be more difficult) [09:52:17] problem solved :) [12:29:25] I'm trying to access an instance with a graphical file manager [12:30:19] following https://wikitech.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Access I did sshfs etytree-1.etytree.eqiad.wmflabs . [12:30:19] missing host [12:30:44] (I get missing host) [15:24:44] Epantaleo: #wikimedia-labs might be a better place to ask these questions. I'm sorry I cannot help you.
