[10:36:22] In an ideal world, I imagine I could be able to do a "%s/wikipedia.org/myownmediawiki.com/g" on the codebase, and then have a native app for my own mediawiki instance. [10:36:38] Is this utterly naive, or does it have some root in reality? [14:06:13] avabre: In theory, it'd be doable... As long as you had all the things setup the same [14:18:55] Reedy: Do you know if anyone has done it before? Isn't this quite relevant for a lot of people running their own instance? [14:19:08] (especially since mediawiki isn't exactly mobile friendly by default) [14:19:11] I'm sure people have [14:19:21] Nope.. A lot of the work is done by MobileFrontend extension [14:25:22] Would you know where in the android-code the URL should be changed? Allthough I guess I can just install mobilefrontend for now... [14:43:17] avabre: o/ in the android app, you can enable the developer settings and easily specify a custom mediawiki base URL [14:43:45] you can enable the developer settings by going to Settings > About the Wikipedia app and clicking the W logo 7 times [14:44:18] then the dev settings will be accessible from an icon in the upper right hand corner of the Settings screen [14:44:37] in the dev settings, the setting you are looking for is 'mediaWikiBaseUri' [14:45:13] i suspect your results will be mixed since it isn't really meant to be a general purpose mediawiki app and there are assumptions in the codebase about the content we'll be getting back. [14:45:16] still, worth a try. [15:00:19] mdholloway: Ah, nice, thanks! [15:00:34] Tried it now, and crashed the app (not surprisingly), [15:01:05] but I haven't even installed the mobilefrontend extensions. [15:01:30] avabre: you're welcome! hmm, sorry to hear that -- yes, not entirely surprising since the app is now centered on the Explore feed (very wikipedia-specific). [15:01:57] I'll look a bit around in documentations to find dependencies and possibly a bare-bones version. [15:02:46] It would be really handy if the codebase had a script for changing the uri, with info about backend dependencies. [15:02:54] Might it be worth a feature-request? [15:03:12] avabre: cool. our main dev wiki is here if you haven't already found it: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Apps/Team/Wikipedia_Android_app_hacking [15:03:28] i think there's already an existing ticket (possibly closed) about having a general-purpose mediawiki app [15:03:51] * mdholloway digs [15:05:15] avabre: here it is: T107042 [15:05:16] T107042: Generic version of Wikipedia mobile apps that other MediaWikis could reuse - https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T107042 [15:08:00] avabre: ah, yes, the app definitely depends on MobileFrontend [15:28:35] I'll look around and will update the ticket if I get any results [15:28:38] Thanks for the info! [16:32:31] bearND: mtg ;) [16:35:55] k [16:37:58] olliv: et al I got cute and decided to take the train into the office today, and it's predictably stuck, so you may have to start without me [16:39:53] maxbinder: sounds good, good luck! [17:04:00] phuedx, jdlrobson - sprint planning?
