[07:37:50] morning YuviPanda [07:38:01] hello Ironholds [07:38:29] I spent all of yesterday watching terrible movies, starting with “Abraham Lincoln the Vampire Hunter" [07:38:30] * YuviPanda cringes [07:38:54] neat [07:39:03] I just realised I forgot to put a cheque in an envelope I sent out on Monday. SHIT. [14:24:17] o/ Ironholds [14:27:04] Ironholds, I don't think that kind of work will fare well in a CS journal. CS journals are decreasing in popularity. [14:27:06] e.g. http://www.researchgate.net/journal/1559-1131_ACM_Transactions_on_the_Web [14:27:57] and http://www.researchgate.net/journal/1046-8188_ACM_Transactions_on_Information_Systems [16:00:53] halfak: *frowns on the use of impact factors* [16:24:39] valhallasw`cloud, it's just a metric and it carries signal. [16:26:45] olá halfak! [16:26:54] Hey Helder! [16:26:56] How's it going? [16:27:00] good [16:27:35] I was looking into this pull request again: https://github.com/halfak/Revision-Scoring/commit/1e04af2f59ee3875291b23e6b797a7ab9a81e44a [16:28:07] it seems the variable "extractors" was renamed to "features" only where it is defined, but it was not updated in the places where it is used [16:28:18] halfak: ^ [16:28:23] I thought I pushed a change to fix that. [16:28:59] hm... maybe I messed up with the tabs I have open on Firefox [16:29:35] nope. Looks like I forgot to push. [16:29:39] It is pushed now. [16:32:09] looks good [16:32:36] merged [16:32:44] Great :) Thanks. [16:33:00] * halfak goes to move the trello card to *don* [16:33:01] e [16:34:35] :-) [16:34:50] morning [16:35:13] Hey Ironholds, see my notes on CS journals? [16:35:18] yup! [16:35:19] Thankee! [16:36:36] There's one more bit that I should add. As far as I can tell, journals in CS tend to work well with meta discussions -- e.g. where is HCI going? What are we not accounting for? What other disciplines should we be pulling in to our work? [16:36:57] The people who read journals tend to be the right people to engage with on those discussions. [16:37:08] Otherwise, conferences == journals for every other field. [16:37:13] grand! [16:37:35] I wanted to start structuring the metrics paper. Then I realised I didn't actually need the LaTeX template to DO that and felt foolish ;p [16:38:35] heh. [16:43:25] halfak: I have a trivial pull request for you: https://github.com/halfak/Revision-Scoring/pull/17 [16:44:02] *merged* [16:44:20] Good call. Should be standard practice. [16:46:55] halfak: it seems we have some http links here as well: https://github.com/halfak/Mediawiki-Utilities/search?utf8=%E2%9C%93&q=http%3A%2F%2F [16:47:15] is it safe to change those on xmlns too? [16:47:31] All of those seem good to me. [16:47:56] Especially the ones in the XML spec and my website (which doesn't support HTTPS) [16:49:03] halfak: if it doesn't support HTTPS, shouldn't the links still point to http? [16:49:33] Don't they? [16:49:40] halfak: yes, it carries a signal on the average number of citations per paper over the last few years. Interpreting that as 'decreasing in popularity' is a stretch, to say the least. [16:50:26] valhallasw`cloud, fair enough, but I'm speaking from personal experience as well. [16:50:28] hmm.. what seems good? keeping the links as "http"? [16:50:36] or changing them to https? [16:50:45] (maybe this is what confused me) [16:50:53] halfak: fair enough. I trust your personal experience more than IF's ;-) [16:51:18] :P [16:51:41] Helder, Any call to the API should be https, since I think that is a best practice. Other URLs should use the URL that seems apt. [16:53:23] halfak: for example, this one: [16:53:24] https://github.com/halfak/Mediawiki-Utilities/blame/d51dcb6319efcb57cf70585d165f2a41feb86e8b/doc/index.rst#L79 [16:53:34] http://github.com/halfak/mediawiki-utilities redirects to https [16:53:53] so maybe it should be changed to https? [16:54:09] Hmm... I guess I don't have a strong opinion there. [16:54:13] ok [17:31:58] lzia, do we have the mobile checkin today? [17:32:16] Ironholds, I'll be missing the first 15 min or so [17:32:26] sure, but, do you know if Dario is here? :D [17:32:32] because I am sat in the meeting by myself. [17:36:43] lzia ? [17:36:48] or, has anyone else seen Dario? [17:41:58] halfak, I'm reading a book you'll really like [17:42:06] Edward O. Wilson's "Letters to a Young Scientist" [17:42:39] on the subject of becoming an advanced mathematician, "it is far easier for scientists to acquire needed collaboration from mathematicians and statisticians than it is for mathematicians and statisticians to find scientists able to make use of their equations" [17:47:27] heh [17:54:01] * YuviPanda is re-reading Coders at Work [17:54:06] somewhat quite reccomendedd [18:32:49] leila, when y'all get back, I've gone to grab some nibbles. Will be back in 2. [19:57:23] Ironholds: halfak wanted to just point out / show this language you might or might not have heard of http://call-cc.org/ [19:58:30] so it's...scheme? ;p [19:58:49] ok [19:58:50] to rephrase [19:58:52] implementation :) [19:58:56] not language :) [19:59:04] I’ve been trying to find something to build with this thing... [19:59:07] and not succeeding much [20:00:54] the Lisp dialects I've actually managed to entirely avoid [20:02:00] they have taught me interesting things that have been applicable in other languages despite me never managing to use lisp dialects directly myself [20:03:02] that reminds me. ottomata, do we have the Hive ODBC client installed? [20:04:41] I'd be interested in trying to build...well, RMySQL but for Hive, I guess. [20:10:54] uhhhh [20:11:09] iunno [20:11:10] hm [20:11:36] i A libodbc1 - ODBC library for Unix [20:11:50] i A unixodbc - Basic ODBC tools [20:11:54] i A unixodbc-dev - ODBC libraries for UNIX (development files) [20:11:57] heh, I thought it was a cat on ottomata’s keyboard [20:15:15] haha [20:15:25] ottomata, https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/Hive/HiveODBC ;p [20:18:23] hey DarTar I got a present for you ;) [20:18:34] wait, another one? [20:18:58] yup [20:18:59] https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Research:Activity_session [20:19:18] All I need to do is finish off documenting the prior art, note the need for a UUID, and have halfak look at it, and R&D has completed its Q3 goals [20:19:21] yer welcome ;p [20:19:36] * YuviPanda mumbles about nobody giving *him* any presents, then realizes he’s on the wrong side of the globe, then heads off for beer [20:19:52] Ironholds: fantastic [20:19:59] YuviPanda, also you're not my boss [20:20:07] Ironholds: yet... [20:20:09] actually [20:20:10] never [20:20:15] Ironholds: can you ping me when it’s a semi-final state so I can read it? [20:20:23] >in a [20:20:28] Ironholds: wait, DarTar is your boss? [20:20:35] YuviPanda: shhhht [20:21:25] I don’t actually know who my boss is. [20:21:28] this is slightly embarassing. [20:21:33] mark I suppose [20:21:43] DarTar, totally [20:21:51] YuviPanda, I have multiple bosses. [20:21:57] there's tnegrin who pays me and sometimes tells me what to do [20:22:04] DarTar, who doesn't pay me but sometimes tells me what to do [20:22:14] maryana and dan, who don't pay me, don't tell me what to do, but I do what they want anyway [20:22:33] Ironholds: only because you love them [20:22:35] and Erik, who doesn't pay me, doesn't tell me what to do, but expects me to have done it already :D [20:22:43] you forgot halfak [20:23:03] agh, Ironholds, hm, i doubt it then? [20:23:05] "This driver will NOT be built as a part of the typical Hive build process and will need to be compiled and built separately according to the instructions below." [20:27:48] darnit [20:27:50] ah well! [20:30:01] * Ironholds blinks [20:30:22] DarTar, did I just seriously see Jon Robson say the way to avoid hoovering up private search data was to only log the things that get precisely zero hits. [20:30:32] * YuviPanda pats Ironholds [20:30:34] because I get so many hits when I type my phonen umber into the search box [20:33:54] Ironholds: I haven’t followed up on the thread yet, I’ll look at it later today [21:26:14] I've decided to build a revert detector in R over the holidays [21:37:24] hey mako [21:37:30] jesus, today is boring and sluggish :/ [21:37:33] I think I have halfak-itis. [21:37:34] are you going to join us on hangout? [21:39:50] yeah, I'm just twiddling my thumbs until then though [21:39:54] * Ironholds will tidy or something [21:50:24] hey Ironholds, what did you used to write articles about, before you went full data nerd? [21:51:19] Legal history and the politics of the Caribbean [21:51:25] oh! and rats. [21:51:46] excellent [21:51:53] just idle curiosity [21:52:02] aha [22:36:34] 3Quarry: Make "Home" navlink go to profile for logged-in users. - https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T85175#940705 (10Capt_Swing) 3NEW a:3yuvipanda
