Unless you hear a different request from the Growth team, you can set the default for the API as follows. Input: article title. Output: a ranked list links that are being recommended, the probability assigned by the model (or any other relevant weight), and the reason for recommendation.

One basic one is: because the readers who read article A read article B, and those who read article B read article C (hence the recommendation to connection A to C). you can also go fancier here and talk about how much of the readership flow the editor will unclog ;) if they create the direct path.
