[16:28:36] o/ all. normally i set the channel topic but my IRC is unhappy at the moment. that said: Welcome to the March 2021 Research showcase! | The YouTube stream is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jw2s_Y4J2tI | Your moderator today is isaacj | More information is available here: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Research/Showcase#March_2021 [16:28:42] starting in a few minutes [16:32:27] https://wikiworkshop.org/2021/ [16:33:40] register here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeiq7MUp9ln8Z9KijslxRh18eT0bqCpQqAGjunC4n99WMumSw/viewform [17:15:19] I think the record skipped [17:15:54] AndyRussG: can you elaborate (i'm watching the zoom preso not livestream so could have missed something) [17:16:54] (isaacj: ahh sorry not important, just a joke about some content being repeated, really sorry for the distraction...) [17:17:07] :thumbs up: [17:17:57] or actually could be an issue with my YouTube stream? [17:18:21] gonna refresh the page to see [17:19:02] question: using wikipedia links as edges allows individuals to know possible nodes to walk to. however, in real life, i wouldn't assume all possible edges from a node you might be on to connected nodes is prior knowledge. In that sense, is walking along an unknown path and hoping to find a node essentially the same as acquiring more nodes (the definition of curiosity you were disputing)? [17:19:03] isaacj: ah ok so it wasn't content repetition, it was actually that my YouTube stream was repeating stuff [17:19:13] refreshing the page seemed to fix it [17:19:29] thanks!!! :) [17:19:56] mpham: got it [17:20:05] i'm going to read that one word-for-word so i don't screw it up [17:20:06] thanks! [17:20:22] hopefully it makes sense.. hard to type and listen at the same time [17:21:06] yeah, i think it's clear. we'll see and can always loop back if there's time [17:26:48] thanks [17:29:44] Questions: in the linked paper, I see participation from a neuroscience research group. If there's time, could the speaker perhaps elaborate more on links with cognitive science or neuroscience? Also are theories about collective representations taken into account at all? (really sorry if I missed something because of my YouTube stream issues...) [17:32:14] AndyRussG: can you elaborate on the links piece [17:32:54] like links between cogsci/neurosci and what? [17:34:17] isaacj: as in, neuroscience studies on curisosity? like with FMRI? [17:34:19] also i'm not certain what collective representations are so maybe speaker would understand that but is there something in particular you're asking about from that theory? [17:34:40] ahh ok [17:35:05] isaacj: regarding collective representations, it's a concept used by some authors which sounds related [17:37:20] so if we're talking about social networks and curiosity, theories about how concepts exist socially seem relevant [17:37:36] thanks so much and thanks to the speaker for the response, and also for the presentation! [17:40:43] folks, registration link for Wiki Workshop 2021 at https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeiq7MUp9ln8Z9KijslxRh18eT0bqCpQqAGjunC4n99WMumSw/viewform [17:40:44] ahh I see --- thanks for the questions and sorry for not getting the second in! [17:41:52] isaacj: ahh no worries of course, thx much :) [17:42:27] hmm I wonder how much of a delay there is... on my end, the stream just ended like 20 seconds ago [17:42:55] yeah i think the delay is something like 10-15 seconds usually if you're liive [17:43:37] ah hmm... yeah that's not bad, for sure
