[16:11:43] meeple27: jaufrecht wanted to catch you up on my linux exploits - disregard if you don't care :) oit sent me a thinkpad pre-loaded with ubuntu 16.04; i tried using it but there were some super weird issues. then i realized there was some school-related stuff that was having issues with linux (like requiring flash and somehow not realizing that i had [16:11:43] installed flash...) realizing that i'll need to keep a proprietary os on hand, i redoubled efforts to get my macbook working. lo and behold, after a few more hours and elbow grease, i have what, as far as i can tell, is a fully-functioning macbook air running ubuntu 16.04. i even got it working with my thunderbolt dock with an external [16:11:43] display/keyboard/mouse/wired ethernet. the only lingering issue is that sometimes networking breaks after waking up from suspend, but i think i can fix that. [16:11:58] 06Team-Practices, 06Community-Tech: Official +1-800-611-5007 || ®HP prinTer Support PHone NuMber||Hp Printer Tech Support Phone number - https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T144199#2591511 (10Staniya121) [16:12:19] interesting [16:12:40] things that rarely work perfectly the first time on Linux, still, in 2016: Flash. sound. printing. [16:13:43] oh god i haven't tried printing yet [16:31:33] i have had good luck with printing and scanning for the last few years [16:32:14] I don't rely on flash much beyond videos, so can't speak to that. [16:33:03] I also haven't had sound problems for a while either [16:33:23] but congrats awjr on getting ubuntu working on your mac! [16:34:02] i was amazed that networking and sound worked out-of-the-box. that was probably a first for me. sound even worked with my usb headset, bluetooth headset, and my external usb soundcard [16:34:17] thanks meeple27 :D feels like a big win. [16:34:27] it is nice to be back in linuxland [16:35:23] "achievement unlocked" [16:35:55] the flash thing is really dumb and i think the problem is on the other end. i have flash working, but for whatever reason the flash detection mechanism on the site i need to access doesn't believe me. [16:36:56] flash and linux has always been weird though, and now flash isn't even updating for linux anymore. fortunately the rest of the internet has moved on from flash except for antiquated education software [16:42:58] flash is a horror show for security. Adobe leaves known remote exploits unpatched for literally years. [16:44:37] >_< [16:46:29] Hmm. Why would anyone use or care about Flash in 2016? [16:47:42] andre__: a lot of web software for education stuff is stuck in 2006 [16:48:18] Whou. I see. :( [16:49:28] it was the darling of computer based training (CBT) for a long time [16:50:01] probably still is actually, that industry cahnges at a pretty slow pace [16:51:24] bd808: yes [16:51:46] all of the online tools for the program i'm starting are flash based [16:52:48] I did CBT contract work as a sub-contractor of a sub-contractor for a few years. the pay is crappy and the requirements are generally poorly defined [16:53:16] I was a "cleaner" for a team that took on failed projects and tried to salvage them [16:53:28] lots of fun [16:54:53] urgh [16:55:50] meeple27: i rescheduled our pairing time because i needed the time to prep for something that came up for tomorrow am. if the time i moved it to sucks for you, feel free to find a better slot [16:56:08] awjr: will look. thanks. [16:56:41] erm. doesn't look like it moved. Did you hit "save"? :P [16:59:00] meeple27: yeah [16:59:07] maybe refresh? [16:59:28] awjr: ok, that did it. Weird that gcal didn't handle that automagically [16:59:50] i think the auto-update can be laggy sometimes [17:00:17] that's cutting it a bit close to our deadline, but the time is fine with me [17:00:40] meeple27: yeah - i could do it earlier but your schedule looks pretty packed [17:00:52] i'll see if there is an earlier slot [17:01:28] okidoke [17:02:01] note that i can move or shortern the 'ap retro data coding' event on my calendar tomorrow afternoon [17:02:58] meeple27: ^ [17:03:10] ok thx [17:03:58] awjr: How would you feel about 2-3 halfhours instead of one hour? [17:04:08] meeple27: +1 [17:04:19] awjr: ok will do [17:08:08] awjr: done.
